Best format to use for ripping CD's to PC
« on: 20 Jul 2011, 03:48 pm »
I'm new to the proccess of ripping CD'c onto my computer.  I will be using a USB connected from my PC to my AVR.  Which one of these formats (MP3, MP4, AAC, CD Audio, WMA, Vorbis, FLAC, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, Musepack, Speex, AU, SND) is best to use?  I will be using EAC to rip and the FOOBAR player for playback.  Thanks for any help.

I'd pick either FLAC, AIFF or Apple Lossless.

These are all able to be inter-converted without loss of quality, and have stable and robust metadata support.

If there is any Apple anywhere in your life, use the Apple lossless.

Else, join me with the FLAC!

I have about 99% of my 7000 tracks ripped in Apple Lossless and they sound great  :thumb:

I like AIFF which I used with EAC. Only problem I have with EAC is getting the track info to show up.

I think mcgsxr hit it right on the head-unless you have a need for Apple formats, go with FLAC.  Nonproprietary and lossless, fits all my needs perfectly.  Later, if I need mp3s for a portable, it's easy to make them from the FLAC files without destroying them.  Doing it right now, as a matter of fact.

If Steve Jobs doesn't own your soul, then FLAC.

Try dbpoweramp before committing to EAC. My db rips sound significantly better than my eac rips.

I use WAV.

For PC usage run EAC to FLAC.
