Martin Logan xover ugliness and rebuild
« on: 22 Oct 2022, 10:13 pm »
I have an old pair of ML Scenarios that I have had for 20+ years. I've decided to give them some love due to wear and tear from moves, and my youngest having them for awhile. I pulled out the xover and much to my horror I saw a no-no of the highest caliber in xover layout. I'll let the pic tell the rest.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

I believe they were made in Kansas, but I"m probably wrong. I do know the Scenario was launched in 1999.  :o

Are you going to update the crossover?  New caps (preferably better quality) and lay out those inductors in a way that they won't interact?

If I hear one more time, "the engineers who designed your product certainly know more than you about how to design it" I'll scream.

I wanted to give a shout out to Martin Logan customer support. I emailed them this morning asking for the schematic and values for the Scenario crossover. Less than a half an hour later, I had a response with the schematic and values of the crossover wishing me best of luck with my project. I am very impressed and pleased. Thank You Martin Logan.

I have both boxes braced and one box lined with Canopus deadening material. I placed my order for crossover parts this morning, and I'll order tube connectors from GR when I'm done here. Couple of progress pics.

Thank You Zuman, that will help me with my layout. I've decided to go outboard with the xover, so I should be able to space them to minimize interference.

I had to have one of the baffles that holds the panel replicated due to cracks in the original at a critical spot. I was just notified it is completed and I will pick it up in around 3pm. My xover parts come in on Weds. so I can finally get going on that.

No, no they won't fit on the original board. I knew going in that the xover was going outboard. I'll build a box and the cover will be plexiglass. The 330uF is just a little less in diameter than a soda can and just as long. The 100uF is bigger around than a soda can, and about 40% the length of a soda can. Yikes

I've been playing around with parts placement on the board and I think I'm getting closer to what I want to accomplish by separating the inductors and transformer. I can finally see a picture that makes sense to me. My wife has a much better spatial recognition and placement than I do and she was absolutely wonderful helping me get to this point.  She's awesome!
