El84/6BQ5 recommendation
« on: 11 Apr 2022, 09:30 pm »
HI everyone

What EL84 and similar tubes have you tried? Can you recommend something?

I am using the Hungarian Tungsram EL84, I haven't compared them to anything else, but I'd like to try some other tubes plus they have been running for a couple of years now.

I am really curious about these:
Siemens EL84 Halske
Telefunken
Sylvanias Black Plate
Russian 6P14P-EV, are all of these the same?
Matsushita EL84

I could buy a pair of NOS Telefunken for $130 but it's still a hefty price, I like neutral tubes but nothing that accentuates the treble or that sounds sharp.
Love to hear what you guys like and why

Yes 6P14 is the EL84.
Email Andrey at GSTubes, now he have Mazda at $23 each and 6P14-K for vibration proofing.

I've used the Sylvania and like them.  I also like the Tungsram you're using.  Be careful with Russian tubes.  I've been told that the pin diameter can be slightly larger than old tubes, causing the sockets to spread.
Gustavo, can you confirm that?

hey thanks

Yeah I know that 6P14 is EL84, what I was asking is if all 6P14 are from the same factory/maker?

As you can see here, https://www.etsy.com/ch/search?q=6p14p-ev&ref=auto-1&as_prefix=6p14 there are a million different ones.

French Mazda any good?

How do the Tungsram and Sylvania compare?

I think the Tungsrams are warmer and have more body.  The Sylvania are more detailed.
I've never heard the Mazdas, but they are well thought of with other tube types.

Iam in service this night, I will see it tommorow,  but it makes sense as winter in Rússia lasts 9 months of the year under negative temperaturés.

The GSTubes link I posted say his 6P14/EL84 are branded Reflector, Polam, Telam, Mazda, Tesla, RFT, TFK.
Others Russian factories:

When I had an el84 Amp, I liked Telam/Polam
el84 tubes. Hugely underrated, made in Poland using Philips equipment. Sweet sound, neutral with good detail and liquidity. Very competitive against Tungsram and Sylvania which I also had. Beat Amperex D getter which I thought was too warm and slow
