Lets talk baffleless speakers
« on: 5 Jun 2023, 06:03 am »
I am often seeing baffleless (no baffle speakers) which claim not to use any form of electronic equalisation. Just yesterday it was with 15" full range Lii Audio drivers.

I appreciate that tweeters can be mounted without a baffle, but at what diameter of driver is this no longer optimal?

For bass the woofer cone have to be very big, 15'' with a baffle it will start attenuate at 60Hz, 18'' at 50Hz.

OK, so at what frequency does it start to attenuate without a baffle?

I dont know, but could say 10Hz worse or more, for this they use multiple woofers baffleless.
Maybe Planet 10 could inform us more accurate.

EDIT: Looks like this needs heavy Eq or DSD.

Perhaps concentrating on this phrase may help the discussion.

"I appreciate that tweeters can be mounted without a baffle, but at what diameter of driver is this no longer optimal?"

Remember there is no equalisation of frequencies allowed

If its accepted that a tweeter doesn't need a baffle, can the same be said of say an 8 inch driver.

IMO no, mid and treble freq are some personal taste dependent.
