Need to know the pros/cons on this Marantz model.  The Outlaw website is selling this at a great price.

I also am considering getting a Marantz receiver.  Just not sure yet which model.  Marantz's step up from the SR-5005 is the SR-6005 with their flagship receiver being the SR-7500.  You can read ad nuaseum about these receivers on the avsforum.com website.

You might want to consider the below website.  They are an authorized Marantz dealer and their prices are very competitive.

SR5005 new w/free shipping $499.99
SR6005 new w/free shipping $649.99
SR6005 Refurbed w/free shipping $579.99

I don't plan on using 3D so I went with the SR5004 for $350.  There have been issues with this model, but I decided to take a chance.  No problems so far.

I almost pulled the trigger on a sr6005 yesterday when I saw A4L lowered the price on a new one down to $649, which is what they were asking for a refurb., then I read that Marantz is about to announce the new SR5006 and SR6006 models which is said to have networking capability built in like the sr7005 has, which explains the price reductions on the current models. I'm now thinking I'll wait for the announcement and then make a decision which one to buy.
Hopefully the new models will be user firmware upgradeable because now only the sr7005 is. I really don't give a hoot about 3D but it could be a selling point a year or two down the road.

Old Thread I Know!!

I found this SR5005 unit on Craigslist today less than a mile from my house.  Then I was surprised to see you guys discussing it here. I got it along with a powered sub and 4 Athena surround speakers plus Center channel.  I figured for $150 it was probably worth it to put in my workshop and have some tunes.  Not really going to be that critical on speaker placement - just through them up.

Cheers,
James

I use a SR6005 which is the next step up version. Should work well for your use.
