THE handy drill/driver for tight spaces!
« on: 22 Aug 2008, 07:44 pm »
I discovered the Black and Decker Rota-Driver at Home Depot.  What a great idea for drilling/screwing in tight areas!  I wanted to share with you other DIY-ers.  Installing the crossover boards into the back bottom of the PE cabinets is a pain.  I screw down the four corners of the board into the cabinet bottom, which means I'm in there at the corner intersection of the bottom and the side brace and the side/back corners.  It was tough even with my Milwaukee cordless screwdriver, but this new B&D baby, with its rotating collet gets a bit right up into the corners of the workspace.

I use my 8 Amp Milwaukee for everything, but if I have to get into tight spots I would use a flexible extender, like this:

The main reason is that that little B&D would get destroyed in my shop, and also B&D is not known for quality. Also, what about when you need a serious drill in a tight space. The B&D won't help, while the extender will.

My 2 cents.

*snicker*

Giggity.

Anyway, I've got a Craftsman thingy that's similar to that.  It seems like a good idea but mine hasn't gotten much use.  Doesn't have much torque, I usually end up using my cordless drill.

Like whubbard said, a good extender is all you need.

IDK, I worked in a cabinet shop for a couple years (building and installing custom kitchens), back then we used Makita 9.6V and 7.2V drills for everything. It was rare to need to break out the 18V or corded drill. The owner bought some of the new Bosch Li-Ion compact drivers, but a lot of the old Makitas still work after over 10 years of constant use. Big drills suck unless you need a big drill, IMHO.

Guys, it's not a pro drill for sure.  I have a big drill and I have and use an extender.  I don't build very many monitor size cabinets, so this thing will be fine and it will get further into a corner than anything else I've seen.  I'm just recommending an inexpensive tool for casual DIY-ers, not for cabinet makers.
