I have ordered X5's and may want to use wall diffusion behind them at their reflection points. I'm interested to know what products members have successfully used to diffuse the rear wave. I don't want anything to absorb the reflection, just diffuse it.
Many thanks!

I've used a DIY diffusor (designed in QRdude) behind my (not Spatial) OB for years now.
At least 4 different types of OB in the last years.
Diffusion on the front wall, bass and tri traps in the corners with absorption at first reflection
points.....including the ceiling
Wouldnt change it for the world......

Looks great, PDR! Thanks...very helpful.
I have floor-to-ceiling corner traps now and a tapestry on the rear wall behind the listening chair. I wonder if I were to point the null, created by the dipole drivers, at the first sidewall reflection points if absorption there would be unnecessary. There are a lot of diffusion products out there, mostly expensive, that probably would work.
Has anyone tried deflecting, rather than diffusing, the rear wave by using a board angled in such a manner that the speakers are not visible through a mirror placed on the front walk? Robert E Greene suggested that, instead of absorbers, on sidewalls in order to creat a RFZ of sorts.

Something like this ?
This room was supposedly designed by Rives Audio.

I use PI Audio Mr T Diffusers behind my X2's with great results. These diffusers are designed for Open Baffle specifically. GR research also used them. https://piaudiogroup.com/
Go to the bottom of the webpage and look for ABB1 Mr. 'T' Hemispherical Radiation

Many thanks! That's so helpful. I've delt with PI Audio before and are great to work with. I purchased their DigiBuss that is excellent.

I posted it to imgur as well. Don't know why it is not showing up.

I have the same behind my X5’s. Love supporting Dave at PI Audio. He’s a class act and always helpful, honest, and high integrity.

Thanks, Morganc. This definitely looks like a good affordable option. Agreed, Dave is a great guy!

Hi, Al, I also purchased the ABB1 Mr. T diffusers but from Greg Rael. Made an immediate difference, one behind each speaker and two behind listening position.

Thanks, bbybaudio. What difference did you hear?

Placement of musicians is more distinct as well as increased width and depth of soundstage. Music was clearer. GIK bass traps arrive next week and they will be placed directly behind each subwoofer on wall. My problem is the flat screen between the two speakers. Could buy two more diffusers to mount such that I can put them up when listening then take them down for viewing.

Sounds like a good idea. Reflections off glass is brutal.

I use two RPG BADArc diffusors in front of the TV. Works great and very easy to move out of the way.

Thanks, Tom. What panels are on the front walls to the left and right of the speakers?

Al
GIK 4" Impression panels in front, GIK 242 Art panels at each FRP, and 3 GIK 4" 2'x5' free standing panels behind the listening position in front of a 12' glass sliding door.

Thanks, Tom!

Hi all, the diffuser panels were my first foray into room treatment. That said, GIK 244 Bass traps with Flex Range technology arrived yesterday and I was shocked by the improvements. Bass definitely better, but all of the music seemed better. Maybe placebo effect?

Great information here. I have GIK 6A 2D-a absorption/diffusion panels. There is a thread about this topic in the GIK circle. My panels sit on the floor and are about 6 inches too short. Yesterday, I raised my panels 6 inches (to cover the AMT driver). Whoa! Huge improvement in sound. I had music playing while I was raising the panels and discovered there is a LOT of sound coming out of the back of my X3s.
After doing some research, these panels provide good absorption between 125Hz and about 800Hz. This pretty much covers the mid range driver. No scattering data available from GIK but based on the GIK thread, it appears likely that diffusion takes place above 800Hz. Perfect for the AMT driver. I know it helped me.
I have 2 range limited GIK bass traps. I'll try using them behind my X3s today. 24 inches tall so they should cover the bass driver pretty well.
Thanks everyone for this useful information.

Hi Marcus, I placed the GIK Bass Traps on the floor directly below disused panels and right behind the subwoofers, Clayton's suggestion. Still hard to fathom the improvement they made.

sic, diffuser panels.

Thanks for the location information. I wasn't sure exactly where to place them. Mine are 2 feet by 2 feet square and 7 inches deep with the range limiter.

Ya think!?!?!

I put the GIK bass traps behind the 15 inch drivers. Yes, I do think there is a sound improvement. I pulled the speakers out an additional 6 inches, now at 5 feet from the front wall. I've only listened to one album so far. Jazz with lots of bass. I am going to keep it this way and continue listening.

That is similar to my setup only my diffuser panels are much higher, AMT hits right in the middle of the panel.

I've already raised my projector screen as high as it will go. Luckily, my wife likes it better raised up (we use recliners to watch movies). Anyway, the diffuser panel is as high as I can go without blocking the screen. Fortunately, it covers the entire AMT area. I like using the bass traps too.

LOL. It's true, I do often state the obvious. I enjoy your podcasts by the way.

Covered the flat screen and very nice improvement. Instrument and vocalist placement is clearer, more lifelike presentation overall. I even found that some music I had deemed unlistenable now sounds great. Between covering the flat screen between X5s and adding the bass traps, the bass is so good I may need to dial the subwoofer amp back.
-
Are your bass traps against the front wall directly behind the speakers, or freestanding away from the walls?
Thanks,
Al
-
Hi Al, my bass traps are a little over 1inch away from front wall, directly behind the speakers.

Many thanks!

This mirrors my experience pretty much exactly. I did dial the bass back 1 click.

Slightly off topic, has anyone tilted their X back a couple degrees? Any change? Thanks ….

Hi, JP, if you mean beyond the factory designed rearward tilt, no.
