LP storage
« on: 7 Aug 2018, 01:27 pm »
My LP collection has slowly grown out of control.  I need to store about 1000 albums.  I was considering the IKEA KALLAX, but I am concerned about the quality and the sturdyness of it.  Does anyone have suggestions for a good, solid storage solution that will also allow for growth of my collection?  Thanks!

you can put these together in less than an hour. Very sturdy.

I just ordered a Kallax. The Billy is an option, too.

These look nice as well. VinylLady uses them behind her couch.

The Mapleshade unfinished oak modules are just what I was looking for.  Kinda pricey, but they look quite sturdy and they can be expanded by adding additional modules.  I ordered 6 modules with the bottom overlay (hold ~150 each) along with 2 bases and 2 tops. Thanks for the tips!

They may not be as cheap as Ikea, but for woodwork they're very cheap. You can still stain them yourself for $10 when you get them. I think that's actually really nice incase you have a look in your room you want to keep, that has darker wood to it. Plus it saves a bunch of money over the finished ones.

I think you made a nice choice!

Kallax, and Expedit before it, are perfect for LP storage and the materials are more than up to the task.  I can understand someone wanting to spend more money and have something where they can take great pride in the quality, but for people who'd rather distribute their resources elsewhere, Kallax is the one to beat.

With four decades of IKEA experience, I feel confident in vouching for the quality of their materials and construction provided expectations are appropriate.

A few golden rules:

- Follow the instructions. I know that sounds stupidly obvious, but it's unbelievable how many people skip a part, use the wrong tools, do things in the wrong order ...
- If it's not designed to be mobile, be prepared to dismantle it in order to move it whether across the room, across town or across the country.
- IKEA don't make products destined to become family heirlooms. There's plenty of furniture available that will last a lifetime or two, but most people balk at paying over $5k for a couch. When choosing a $500 couch ...

Good luck!

good point jpm - another reason I chose the Mapleshade is to be able to transport my records.  I'm moving to a new house in November, and I'll be able to use the separate modules for transport.  Safer than moving boxes.

I love my Kallax unit, but I followed the great instructions from this great website to reinforce it. It is easy and makes it extremely sturdy. https://newrecordday.com/diy-ikea-kallax-record-shelf/
