Title: Has anyone discovered the AR-XA tone arm is wired wrong?
Post by: Wayner on 4 Oct 2006, 01:52 pm
Working on my third AR, I was doing some signal tracing from the headshell to the RCA jacks when I descovered that AR switched the grounds on the left and right channels. Therefore, to wire the cartridge correctly, the red (R+) goes with the blue (R-) and the white (L+) goes with the green (L-).

The Current standard is:

RED = R+
GREEN = R-

WHITE = L+
BLUE = L-

Did the standards change in the late 1960's? The reason is why would all 3 turntables be wired incorrectly?

To make sure I wasn't insane, I checked my VPI and Empire 598 and they are fine.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? By the way, after I switched the ground leads, I can't tell the difference......yet.

Hopefully this isnt too late.   I have reviewed my copy on my HD of the orginal AR-XA manual and it states the following:
Red right channel hot
Black right channel ground
White left channel hot
Green left channel ground
This was what AR wired their XA tonearms to according to the orginal owners manual.
