Some pics of my brand new Super Alnico Monitors
« on: 21 Aug 2015, 10:27 pm »
 Hi, folks,

My new Super Alnico monitors arrived yesterday. I haven't even had a chance to hook them up yet but here's what they look like.

The finish is zebrawood. As usual, Louis is the consummate artisan and the cabinetry is furniture quality gorgeous.   Note the new logo medallions and the "smiley" speaker grills. I also understand
that the internal wiring and the binding posts have been upgraded.

Listening impressions to follow when I have had some time to run them in.

Have a good weekend!

Beautiful!  My favorite wood and the logo is beautiful and a great statement.

Are yours the conventional dimensions or did you get the wide baffle?  I can't tell from the photos.  Maybe I'm next in line......  oh Louis.. Looouis?

Gorgeous.  I really like the finish.  Louis does terrific work... inside and out.  Be prepared for an "organic" experience.  I find this word to describe Omega's sound to be right on.    Enjoy.

Sweet! Thanks for posting. It's so helpful to see Louis' creations in various environments and lighting. I'm still somewhat undecided on the finish I want.

Louis did a terrific job on the walnut.  The lighting here makes them appear somewhat lighter but the finish with normal shades of light is darker overall.

My Hoyt Bedford Type 1.

Rebbi, enjoy your new Omegas.  You will be in single driver heaven.
RDavidson, picking out a finish isn't easy.  I finally chose the Birch Burl for my Type 1's.  It pops like crazy.

Lovely speakers Rebbi.  Congratulations.  :thumb:

Of Rebbi's pictures.  This one is the most accurate color and tone wise as far as Zebrawood goes, at least on my monitor.  One of my favorite finishes.

Can't wait to read about your listening impressions.  :hyper:

Rebbi congratulations on those beauties.

24" stands are TransDeco (from Amazon)...  very impressive for the price.  Quality throughout.

Canada Rob is right on this one. This picture is the most accurate representation of the finish color. These were all cell phone pics and I didn't have a chance to correct the underexposure of the other two.

Rebbi—
Congratulations! Be prepared for them to sound better on a daily basis for the next few weeks as they break in. After that, the change will be noticeable every week. I'm about 6 weeks in and they're still improving.

What were the upgrades in internal wiring and binding posts?

ozoid,
I don't really know what the specific upgrades are, internally. But I think Louis said that he's using a different wire, and also that he's changed the cutout for the driver in some way? Wish I could tell you more.

I am extremely lucky in so many ways: wonderful family, good job, great friends and coworkers, good health. But when it comes to ordering anything through the mail, not so much.

It seems that FedEx did a first rate job manhandling one of my shipping cartons. They knocked the voice coil on one of my drivers out of alignment. You can see that the whizzer cone is skewed slightly off center (the whizzer is attached to the voice coil) and the driver makes a loud buzzing, rattling noise that has gotten worse with play time.

I spoke with Louis about this yesterday and - always the gentleman - he's sending me a new driver tomorrow. This happens from time to time, especially when FedEx "belly flops" a package straight down on to the ground or the inside of a truck.

The good news is that the few minutes of music that I got to hear before the issue manifested itself sounded amazing, even right out of the box! So I'm looking forward to getting back on track soon. Also, it'll give me a chance to see what the driver and the inside of the cabinet look like, so that'l be fun.

My new driver arrived and it is perfect and the speakers are breaking in right now. I will post some pictures of the driver replacement process because I think you will find them interesting. Pictures to follow…
