There is Phase Linear Model 1000II and Model 1000 Serie 2.

The first reference turns out to be for a basic 1000, not the model 2 which is a far different animal. This has been the case for every reference I have found. It appears that hifiengine does in fact have the owner's manual for both the basic 1000 and the 1000 model 2, BUT it is only open to members, AND is not accepting new members. So I can't get there from here. VERY FRUSTRATING!!! :duh:

This might get you there. https://www.phaselinearhistory.stereomanuals.com/components.htm
You might add a picture or two of front back etc.

I appreciate all your help. Unfortunately they, like everybody else, only have the service manual and not the owners which is what I need.

Is this what you are looking for? A seller on eBay has a manual for a 1000 Series 2. See if he will make you a copy or pdf for a few bucks.

Thank you both for your kindness in sending the PDF files. Now I have two questions. The diagram on top of the unit plus comments in the owners manual state the unit is for one channel. Yet the hookup diagram shows the output from the 1000 being split into two leads going into the tape recorders input. Would using two units with each hooking up a single lead to the tape recorder be preferable? Or a bad idea/not practical? Second question -- any tips or secrets on how to get the best performance out of the 1000 nodel2?

The diagram is simplified to show one PAIR of RCA cables to the INPUT & OUTPUTS. They show a single line (then splitting out) to save space on the diagram. Hook up is the same as you had to your tape machine only now you have the 1000 in between.
I used to service Phase Linear product and personally I never liked the PL noise reduction units. I always used dBX when I had to. All you can do is experiment to get the sound the way you like it. Try not to overload the INPUT as it will create what we called a "pumping" or breathing sound to the audio.

Hifiengine has lots of manuals and the downloads are free. I owned one of those along with most (probably with th exeption of a couple of amps and one or two other pieces) of the Phase Linear equipment more than 40 years ago (when I was 5 years old of course). When cassettes with Dolby B were the standard, when listening to FM (I owned the Phase Linear 5100 tuner back then), and when listening to TV sound (back then there was no stereo TV and I used a Pioneer TVX9500 dual mono TV tuner), I enjoyed the unit when playing back those old sources.
