AKG K340
« on: 12 Dec 2018, 11:00 am »
Anyone try these with a Bryston pre-amp? I'm considering a pair which would be my first headphone. They are 400 ohm with a sensitivity of 94 dB/mW.  Just wondering if they would be a good match. I have a BP-6. Thanks.

How much does the seller want for his K340? I'd be cautious because it's an old headphone that uses a crossover for it's 2-way electrostatic/dynamic driver array and the capacitors are known to have leaked by now. I think K340 is worth owning if you know what you're doing regardless of what you have to power it. My first choice would be a tube amplifier. I like the warmth it brings to the table with AKG headphones of this particular era.

I agree 100% with the above cautionary post.

They want $150. I was a little nervous regarding the age of them. I ended up with Sennheiser HD600's. I'm enjoying them. Thanks for the input though.

HD600 is a far better headphone IMO and will last a lot longer. 150$ is a bit steep for a K340 if you ask me.

Happy New Year!

Thanks. That's reassuring. Now I'm researching headphone amps. The Bryston BHA-1 is leading the pack. But at this point I'm happy with the BP-6.

Happy New Year to you too!

I used to have a few AKG K340's.  I would only run them off of VERY powerful, dedicated headphone amps or refined speaker amps.  Then there are the different K340 versions with different sound signatures ("bass heavy" version, etc).

Well, I used to have a K240 Monitor and DF. To this day I haven't found a headphone that is as colorless (pne might say tasteless) as the K240 DF. I'd be interested to hear a pair of Audio Technica ATH-R70X.
