Title: Anyone see Barbie and too embarrassed to post?
Post by: WGH on 26 Jul 2023, 06:15 pm

I haven't seen Barbie yet but definitely will when it's streaming. Everyone involved in making this film is a favorite, from Greta Gerwig to Margo Robbie to everyone in between.

The server at Borderlands Brewing Co. Sam Hughes Taproom (https://www.borderlandsbrewing.com/sam-hughes) loved Barbie, her boyfriend stayed home. A friend just texted me saying that the Barbie showing was well attended with lots of young girls dressed up in Barbie outfits but didn't see a single Ken.

I definitely want to.  But I'm waiting to see it at home.

I saw Barbie... yesterday my wife got her 1959 doll out of a box at the bottom of the closet.  Her head had come off, so I spent an hour with her rigging a new pivot joint.  She's not as flexible as she once was, but she's 65 years old.

Nope...not what I would usually see in the theater.

That said, I will probably see it when I can watch it home.

My 21 year old son saw it, and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I will see it if somebody wants to pay me $500 to do so.
My sister had a Barbie (of course). My parents didn't want her to but somebody gave her one so that were stuck with the choice of which would cause less lasting trauma- confiscating it or giving in. They let her keep it.
Only thing I want to know is, why does Ken look like Mike Pence?

Wonder if anyone tried to buy a ticket with Barbie money?

I'm with the general consensus here, not if you paid me.  Well, maybe if you paid me more than anyone would actually pay me.  I might, a very low probability might, watch it on a streaming service for "free" (streaming services aren't free) when it makes the rounds.  Unless I have something more pleasant to do like excising an ingrown toenail.

Looks like you will have to face this serious assignment.
Went to the grocery yesterday Friday and several cash girls on the coffee break were excited talking about this movie, from what I hear they were planning go together using Barbie clothes.

Who's the brain dead?

Barbie viewer: I'm spending $12 to watch a silly movie with my friends.
Audiophile: I'm spending $400 on this power cord so the music electrons can move better.

I think that we would all be better off if we didn't take the things we like [or other people like] too seriously.

I'll probably rent/stream this movie out well after its pop culture influence has expired - but that is consistent with my movie viewing habits.

Its interesting how things that women like is often denigrated by men.  Especially if it's 'too girly' like in this thread.

It's often too predictable that if men are attacked and portrayed as being weak, immoral, and spineless that that is okay and acceptable. Well I am not weak, immoral, and spineless and this movie is just another attack on good men. There are a few of us who refuse to allow this BS to degrade us. Go to hell Barbie!

Yours truly,       L.D.

Spending money on the cord actual is a better use of money. At least you have something.

Nowadays, they push movies so fast that it will be streaming in record time. Watch it at home without having to pay for anything (parking, tickets, overpriced soda and popcorn, etc.).

$12?

I just looked it up an they were $16.

Not gonna go, but my two adult daughters and my niece are going today. I'm certainly not going to denigrate those who go to see it (my daughters are smart, fun, well-balanced professionals with advanced college degrees and I respect them because of their values and accomplishments, not just because they're my daughters).
This is one of the completely immersive "Barbie Worlds" my daughters constantly created on our upstairs landing more than 25 years ago when they were in kindergarten...

Just checked our local Cinemark multiplex. Barbie tickets are $8.25 with free parking.

Looks like Barbie had one too many martinis with Ken.

As for the movie, not my thing but it probably has some laughs in it.

It's got a good Rotten Tomatoes score.

I'd go see it, especially over Oppenheimer.  The latter seems a bit too intense for me.

Is this similar to Ted Cruz's tirade about the Dr. Seuss foundation's stopping production of six books?

Some people have to pay to park. But, I randomly looked up tickets locally and they were $15.99. I'm sure there are ways to get discounts, including waiting for whatever it is to go to the budget theater so you can watch it before it get's phased out.

So was Bild Lilli, the German doll Barbie was directly patterned on. Only thing is, Lilli was based on a comic art character that was kind of a tramp. The dolls were marketed to adult males, often as gag gifts. The story is told well on Wikipedia so I won't repeat much of it here. But the short version: Mattel's Ruth Handler saw one on a trip to Europe, bought it for her daughter (perhaps unaware of its history?) and decided it fit the concept of an adult-body doll she had in mind (and had to fight for). Several years later, Barbie was launched. A couple more years Mattel bought all rights to the German doll and shut down production, completing Lascivious Lilli's transformation into squeaky-clean Barbie. Here they are side by side in case anybody thinks Barbie wasn't strongly influenced by Lilli right down to the subtle side-eye:

Like all mega $ production nowadays this movie is a wash but is soft, light weight and I believe it is not offensive to the family, there are far worse things circulating freely out there, very worse, whose aim is to corrupt the morals of young children, I have never seen anyone speak a word against this immoral garbage below>

Rusty Jefferson: I don't go to theaters much at all to see anything at all, but maybe once it's streamable....If the James Bond reference was intended to suggest gender stereotyping on my part, I'd like to clarify that all my remarks were intended to relate to the cultural climate of the times. One of the Lilli cartoons depicted her in a two-piece bikini, saying to a policeman informing her that the two-piece was impermissible on the street, "Which piece do you recommend I take off?". Hard to imagine 'wholesome' Barbie saying that, and I wondered how many parents - some of which objected to her well developed upper body- would have reacted to the history (Or to this movie!), or to the fact that Barbie was an almost exact copy of another doll, not an original doll, had they known?

You know, the existence of companies (and streaming services) like The Criterion Collection and MUBI mean that for a true film lover, this is the best time to be alive in all of history.  The sheer amount of exceptionally high quality content now has never, ever been equaled in the past.

To those people carping about Barbie, I'd suggest signing up for Criterion and/or MUBI and stop wasting your anger on what the general public cares about.

And, that's a good reason to not watch it. Movies (and TV shows) should be about entertainment. I want to yell when the bad guys get blown up. I want to cheer when the superhero comes to save the day. I want my sides to hurt when the most insane pratfall happens.

I don't want my entertainment to be infected with social nor political injections. Hollywood/entertainment in general is the last group that should be trying to pass judgement on anything.

And that's why they make all sorts of movies.  I'll watch Barbie eventually.  I have no problem with political bits and pieces.
Personally, I want a movie to make me think if it's serious, bedazzle if it's action, and LOL at slapstick, or chuckle at wit.

Finally watched it in the theater room. Loved it. Surprised by all the brit cameos. Seemed like half of Sex Education was in it. I don't see how anyone would have a problem with the film unless you don't like seeing women in charge. It's smart, it's funny, the performances are uniformly strong, and it has heart.

Ken and all the horse references had me rolling.

I saw it a couple of times with wife and adult daughter.
We all liked it. Very over the top trippy eye candy production design, forgettable music, good performances. There is a definite feminist message in it which some may not appreciate, but as a father to 4 adult women I do get it, mostly.
Margot Robbie looks and sounds like she was born a Barbie clone. She's worth watching by herself, IMO. She's reputedly earning $50,000,000 from the movie, $12M as actor and ~$40M from points as producer. She had a major hand in putting this together, selling the idea to Warner Bros., choosing the cast, director/writer, and design people. Dumb blond, she ain't.
Net, I thought it was fun to watch. I can always take or leave the politics in entertainment, as long as I'm enjoying the fare.
