Hi al

Yes replacing the 2B - it is the amp section from the new B135 SST2 integrated amp.

Hi James,

It would seem these are interesting times over at Bryston!
Is this the start of an complete new line of poweramps?
Will there be a 4.5B sst2?

How does the new amp compare to the regular 2b?

Cheers,
Bob

No plans on the larger amp front but the new B135  just sounded so good we decided to replace the 2B SST and the BP16 preamp with the parts from the B135.

Very interesting, I was considering buying a 2BSST2 to drive my centre speaker, so, does this new amp tonally match the rest of the series? It would be working alongside my 4BSST2 running the front two.

Hi Alpha

Yes the feature set on the 2.5B is identical to the older 2B but has 135 watts per channel instead of 100 watts and of course the new circuitry.

Thank you James. As a follow up question, given that I want this to go between my SP3 and PMC CB6i speaker, what in your opinion is the best configuration, use the amp in bridged mono and use the single XLR out, use the dual xlr outs and biamp the speaker? The CB6i is a fairly benign 6 Ohm nominal I think. I presently use a Powerpac-120 and assume that the 2.5B would be an even better match to my 4BSST2?.

Yes at 6 ohms and a benign load use the 2.5 B in mono.

Thank you again, last question, I promise, but, when will these start shipping, roughly?

Hi James, do you have any photos or specs at all yet available for the 2.5B?

You are talking about xlr and bridging of the amplifier, will the 2,5 have that?

Hi James

Would the 2.5 be bridgeable and accommodate a 4ohm load (I'm thinking not), it would be for my centre channel and possible another 2.5 for the rears, hate having one channel sitting there be idle.

Another option to compliment the 2.5 and the 135 might be a similar sized mono block which would be ideal and might generate a lot of interest for those of us who currently have (and I know there are a lot of us) a 4B, 3B or 2B upfront and would just like to add a smaller centre channel amp for a HT set-up in a smaller room, maybe something to consider.

Hi Robert,

So much depends on the 'reactivity' of the load - a 3-4 ohm load on most dynamic type speakers would not be a problem with a bridged 2.5B whereas an electrostatic speaker would not be a good match.  Subwoofers for instance have very easy 'duty cycles' so bridging a 2.5 is no issue at all.

The 2B SST² was rated at 180W at 4 ohms.  The 2.5B SST², with 35% higher power at 8 ohms (135W vs. 100W) is still rated at the same 180W at 4 ohms.  Was the power supply and/or heatsink capacity not increased to allow a correspondingly higher 4 ohm output?

At little more power supply Steve but I would rather err on the conservative side.

Interesting news indeed, was advised not to use my 2BLP and 3BST in bridged mode on a 4 ohm load so the 2.5 just might fit he bill, does the same hold true with the current 2BSST?

Hi Robert - yes true but as I said I have used the 2BSST and the 3B SST many times in bridged mode with 4 ohms loads on typical dynamic speakers with no issues at all.  If the amplifier was having problems you would see the LED current limiting lighting up RED.
