Title: Fet Valve 600R reviewed in The Absolute Sound
Post by: avahifi on 1 Aug 2012, 03:06 pm
The great review of our Fet Valve 600R hybrid power amplifier appears in the new issue of The Absolute Sound, now in the mail.

Dick Olsher calls it a "Superstar".  What more can I say!  This amplifier is for real.

Read and enjoy and remember it is on sale now for 15% off.  The Fet Valve 600R upgrade to almost any of our older big hybrid amplifiers is on sale too.

Now is the time to enjoy an awesome new amplifier at the best price possible.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

Congratulations on a great review. I think it's a Superstar as well and have enjoyed every minute I've spent listening to it. A significant amplifier at a reasonable price.  :)

Ha, what a coincidence. This same issue has Cordesman's review of the PS Audio PWD DAC, which from what I hear is also a rave. Two rave products that I actually own in the same issue! Who-da thunk?

Congrats Frank. I'm still loving mine.

Our Fet Valve 600R review is available right now on line at The Absolute Sound's new Buyers Guide issue.  You can even download the whole magazine free as a .pdf file.

Here is the web link:  http://www.avguide.com/buyers-guide/the-absolute-sound-guide-audio-electronics-2012

They also give us nice mentions of the new Synergy amplifiers and the Ultravalve and Transcendence 8 remain on their Editor's Choice list.

Lots of good press for Audio by Van Alstine and a new review coming soon in Enjoy the Music.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

Congratulations Frank and company on the excellent review. Dick Olsher is one of the few audio reviewers I read of the main audio rags. I'm looking fwd to the Enjoy the Music review.

Hi Frank,

I'm glad that you've received a good review of your amplifier.  I know I keep saying this but I will buy one of your products in the future.

Cheers Rod

WOW!!! Getting Dicked can be a GOOD thing ... and it ain't necessarily "...that's what SHE said ..."

LOL!! But seriously, folks, about the amp ...

Lines from Will Smith movies come to mind:

"I've got to gotta me one of these!" {Independence Day, 1996}

"Cool, whatever you say, slick, but I need to tell you something about all your skills. As of right now, they mean precisely... dick [Olsher]. "{ Men in Black, 1997}

Will the Superstar make "Superstar" sound better?

THIS is the one that could use a little tuning up:

But I love Rita's performance for all of it's warts and imperfections. That music was REAL.

Sorry for the off topic post Frank!

Congratulations on a great review.  I've had my 400R for about 8 months now, and I'm gratified to report that my impressions and experience with this amp pretty well match Dick Olsher's...even his rolling in the Sylvania Gold 12AT7 tubes.  I've been using this tube for about 2 months now and also listened with the Mullard CV4024.  While the Mullard is terrific on vocals, the Sylvania Golds just pull out more of everything the 400R has to offer that Dick discusses in the review.  What an astoundingly musical amp in any way you wish to characterize the 2-channel listening experience...and at a heck of a bargain price too!!

I received my copy of The Absolute Sound a little while ago. I had already read through the review of the new equipment from the bookmark Frank posted above. So, I was in no particular hurry to jump to the review in the magazine when it arrived.

Only yesterday I found something very telling about the equipment and of Frank that I was not expecting.

In the manufacturers comments Frank stepped aside to give credit to Aado Perandi, Mithat Konar and Dean Kayser for the basic engineering work involved.

Now I can't claim to have read every reponse in TAS or Stereophile over many years but this is first I recall of a company principal taking the opportunity spread the design/engineering credit.

A simple little thing to some, perhaps, but it speaks volumes to me.

There is a slightly off-handed compliment/positive endorsement in issue 4 of "Copper" http://copper.psaudio.com/home/
Folke Persson states: "I swapped it (ARC D-150 amp) out with an AVA 600R hybrid amp that I’d used with
Maggies in a second system (a whole ‘nother story). At first I was disappointed in its midrange reproduction
(“I knew D-150, and you’re no D-150!”) but grew to appreciate its character there and throughout
the range. So here I am in the “living” room with the best sound in my experience."

Interesting urbanshaman, I had read Issue 4 but missed that so went back via your link for a second look.  I still don't find it in Persson's system blog.

The comments are in issue 3 of Copper, not in issue 4.  The photo of his system shows the 600R in the lower slot in his equipment rack.

Weird.  I found it in Issue 2.  "In My Room" by Desmond Fretz.

OK, curiosity got the best of me, I had to check back to find the reference.  Turned out tomatchison was correct as I found it in Issue 2.

But here is the most interesting part.  Copper is published by Paul McGowan and folks at PS Audio.  And PS Audio introduced their new "super amps" designed by Bascom King a bit over a year ago, the BHK Signature 250 and 300 monos.  Like Frank, Bascom is a designer with long years of experience and one held in high regard, so when he was challenged to design a new no-holds-barred amp for PS Audio he chose to utilize vacuum tubes for the front end driver stage and MOSFETs for the output stage.  I'm not suggesting the AVA 600R and BHK Signature designs are identical, but the basic topology seems to be the same.  The BHK Signature amps do have fancier metalwork enclosures, but they should offer something more for their $7,500 and $15,000 (per pair) prices.

Anyway, I found it interesting that a reader of the PS Audio publication thought enough of his AVA amp to post it there.

Kind of strange that the same 600R comment appears in THREE  of the Copper issues that I downloaded; find it in the "In My Room" section!

Issue 1, can't find it
Issue 2, p 40, by Desmond Fretz.
Issue 3, p 41 by Desmond Fretz
Issue 4, p 43 by Folke Persson

Hmmmm.
