Finally placed an order for HT2-TLs
« on: 9 Jun 2009, 04:17 am »
Talked to Jim this evening.  He's going to try to match the color to a photo of an armoire in my living room that I can't use (evil, giant TV is 3x too wide).  But, I liked the color that it's cherry had been stained.

Now for the long wait.  Wonder if I'll go completely insane?  :lol:

P.S. I have an OPPO BDP-83 that should arrive tomorrow.  So, here's a question for all of you SACD fans.  Which SACDs have great 2-channel mixes (noticebly better than the RedBook CD version)?  Looking around the Web, I notice lots of people enjoying Brothers in Arms, Dark Side of the Moon, Honky Chateau, and Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, just to name a few albums I know well, but reading reviews on Amazon or even sa-cd.net hasn't been all that insightful (they mostly focus on multi-channel), so any personal experience with SACDs making your Salks sound good will be appreciated.

Yes, you will undoubtedly go insane unless you practice the Salk Signature Sound 12 step program that has helped so many before you.

Please, I hope that I do not offend anyone.  In truth, 12 step programs have saved many lives.

Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over our inferior audio - that our listening experience had become unsatisfying and fatiguing;
Step 2 - We came to believe that a team composed of a speaker designer and builder, a TL design consultant, a cabinet/crossover designer, and one of the greatest crossover designers of our time could restore us to high fidelity;
Step 3 - We made a decision to turn our audio needs over to the care of Jim and Dennis;
Step 4 - We made an inventory of our needs to have the best components, listen to the best music, or some combination therein;
Step 5 - We admitted to Jim, to Dennis, to ourselves and to our fellow forum members, but never to our wives, the exact nature of our insecurities;
Step 6 - We are entirely ready to have Jim, with the help of Frank Van Alstine, in extreme cases, remove all poorly sounding midrange and solid state artifacts;
Step 7 - We humbly asked GIK or ReadyTraps to give us free advice to remove slap echo, reverberations, cancellations, and suckout and then we went and bought stuff for a few bucks cheaper somewhere else;
Step 8 - We made a list of all persons we had harmed, including bpape, Eathan, et al, (see above) and became willing to make amends to them by finally buying their stuff, and without even asking for a discount;
Step 9 - We made direct amends to people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others, by telling those people that we secretly scoffed because of their stupid audio choices and that we wanted to feel that they were dumber than us;
Step 10 - We continued to admitted our wrongs, but only to ourselves and each other, such as the wrong we committed when we tried to tell someone that we could really hear a difference when that little bowl from the far east was placed in the room, snickering to ourselves;
Step 11 - We sought through careful listening and comparison to improve our conscious connection with the music as a form of personal growth and self-actualization; and
Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message, that the sound is "better than being there," to other prospective purchasers, and to prevent, whenever possible, friends from purchasing audio equipment from Big Box stores, unscrupulous dealers, wonder wire salesman, snake oil salesman, and anyone that cryoprotects, cryopreserves, cryoenhances, or otherwise cryos anything.

Please feel free to modify these in any way.

That's odd.  I just placed an order last night, too, for HT2-TLs to match existing furniture in my living room.  Looks like they'll be doing mahogany with a dark dye for mine.

Now we wait!

After 6 months of agony doing research, reading nearly every thread in this forum, PM'ing various owners, emailing with Jim, hearing the line up of speakers at AK Fest, chatting with Jim and Dennis at the show, avoid temptation to buy until I move, then repeat and rinse... I finally decided to not wait until I move and place an order.

I decided to go with the STRTs in med cherry.  I'll tell you what.  I feel good.  The stress and desire to move forward was killing me and now I feel a big load was taken off me and I feel very good about my choice and do not regret it.

Thanks to Nuance, Oneinthepeipe, Fsimms, Earthbound, Jim, Dennis, and everyone else in the forums who helped me come to terms.

BTW, don't tell my wife the amount of stress I was under all this time.  Not up for all the eye rollin'.  :D

Feels good to go from this. :banghead: to this.  :beer:

oneinthepipe,

No, no.  You're supposed to convince me I'm NOT insane for spending this much on a pair of speakers that I won't see for two months, when I could just as easily walk into Wally World and grab the user friendly HTiB for $200 and have 5.1 surround and a happier wife who won't constantly roll her eyes at me.

BTW, even though it's been said a lot by many, many folks on here, thanks to Nuance for piquing my interest in Salk over at AVS.  And thanks to Jim for his patience, both in the past and in the near future.  And thanks to all of the forum members who've educated the heck out of me, even though my wallet can't keep up (or more accurately, my wife's tolerance for all things electronic).

mathgeek97 & mchuckp - congrats on your new speakers!

Oneinthepipe - The 12 steps are great.  However, I remind you that this is high-end audio, where overkill is never enough.  We may need to add just a few more steps.  I have two modest suggestions:

13.  Practice photographing FedEx trucks when ever you see them.  In the excitement of the moment on delivery day, you may forget to photograph the actual delivery truck, and you can always post one of your practice shots.  No one will ever notice :wink:.

14.  Acquire a hat with a sturdy chinstrap.  When you first listen to your new speakers, your jaw will need the extra support.  When trying to impress your wife or friends with you superior taste and wisdom, looking like a slack-jawed fool detracts from the overall effect.  Some people have found that attaching a droolcup to the chinstrap is also useful.

If any others have useful advice, please add them?

15.  Buy your wife something nice before planting the seed about ideal speaker placement so you don't get chased around the house with a frying pan when she comes home from work to find them pulled 18" off the wall.

This is going to be a TOUGH one for me.

Maybe we should start a new thread entitled "How do you know that you are addicted to Salk Speakers?"

Great idea!  I know I am hooked.

Salk speakers sure do make "sick" days all that much better, and occasionally even the reason! *cough* *cough*   :wink:

And at first it was amusing... but, some source material I refuse to listen to anymore in other stereos or especially in the car - just too disappointing and even irritating...

R Swerdlow, thanks.

mchuckp,
My plan: Just pull the speakers out 1" before going to bed, if
1) the wife watched the TV that day (to avoid many 1" moves between viewings.  it's all about stealth).
2) the wife goes to bed, first.
3) the wife doesn't catch on...

Great news, gents!  Congrats and welcome to the family.  Don't forget to post impressions and pics when they arrive.  We need some speaker porn!  :D

Gotta tell you guys about my Salk prank.  Hope my friend doesn't get mad if he reads this.  He's more of a lurker here.

After AK Fest, I raved to a friend of mine about the Salk line up.  The next day he ordered a pair of STs.  I thought he was playing a joke on me and I made him send me a copy of his invoice.  I thought for sure he was joking.  Well he wasn't.

Here we are close to 6 weeks later and he is dying waiting for his STs losing sleep waiting for any info he can get from Jim on the progress.  I told him that I ordered my STRTs on Monday (which is true :D) and he was thrilled for me.  I emailed him Tuesday morning with the subject line ":) :) :) :)" and said:

"Just got a call from Jim.  He had someone cancel their order in the late stages due to financial issues and it happened to be med cherry.  He said it is probably a little lighter in color than what I was looking for but pretty close.  He said if I want them he can put on the finishing touches and have them ready tomorrow.

Can you sense the smile on my face.  :D"

He bought it hook, line, and sinker and was really perturbed.  He said it was unfair that I'm getting mine before him.  I gave him a whole story on Karma and that I deserved them first.  LOL!  I told him I was picking them up this weekend.  I won't go through all of our exchanges but the short of it was that I got him good and he deserved it for past events in our life.

I thought about keeping it going with fake pix of Fed Ex trucks and such and then when it came time for pix of my beauties, send him some pix of some Coby speakers and end the prank.  I couldn't do it.  I had to tell him and relieve his pain a few hours later.  I guess I'm too nice. :wink:

Anyway, I got a big kick out of it and he deserved it.  I figure with all the pain we all go through waiting for ours, you can all relate.  I actually owe my friend a lot.  He is actually the one who introduced me to Salk speakers back and January when I first started MY journey.

So when is the expected arrival date of both your speakers?

Jim gave me his usual 30-45 days.  I'm going to assume 45-60 in hopes of being surprised with an early arrival. :D

Nice!  Jim told me 30-60 for the HT2-TLs.  I guess I get extra time added to mine for not beating ChicagoSparty in the race to order.   :)

I received an update from Jim this morning.
One of my HT2-TLs is finished.  On the other one, they noticed a small finish flaw on the front baffle.  They are putting a new topcoat on that one, and will assemble the tower the following day.  Everything should ship out this week. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW, I *heart* that kind of attention to detail!  Thanks, Jim!!!!!!
