DAC DAC 2 HSV
« on: 2 Nov 2018, 10:31 pm »

The 130dB+ DAC DAC 2 HSV is a very unique DAC and features a natural feeling analog potentiometer that controls digital attenuation. This preserves the ultra-short analog signal path of the DAC DAC while allowing precise volume control. This DAC is especially suited for systems with a fixed volume digital source (such as a CD transport) to drive the amplifiers directly.

the analog side of things

I was asked today about the analog parts of the DAC DAC 2 HSV.

The question: How is the HSV different than the HS, analog-wise?

The answer: It's NOT different, analog wise.  The volume control (performed on the DATA rather than the analog output), as well as the analog pot digitization, all occurs on the digital side of the circuitry.  That's how we keep the exact same specifications and add a volume control, so there's no sacrifice on performance as with DACs that use an analog potentiometer after the DAC (pretty much every DAC with a volume control).  This way, you can drive your amps directly with the DAC DAC even if the source has no volume control.  Great for CD transports and streamers that simply serve the full scale data.  This can be used to put a super-high performance no-compromise 2-channel system together.  No preamp to add to the signal path, so no added interconnects, and no added noise and distortion.

Thanks to Bob in AZ for the question.

Cherry 130dB+ DAC DAC 2 HSV mentioned here, in this DAC DAC 2 HS review:

An excerpt about Cherry DACs from another thread....

We have measured performance of the Cherry DAC DAC (version 1 HS/TL, 130dB+ version 2 HS/HSV) driven by our 1-ft UHF SPDIF gold cable in the following ways while varying jitter from none until the DAC can't even lock:
  • THD+N vs amplitude
  • THD+N vs frequency at 100mFS
  • THD+N vs frequency at FS
  • FFT of -60dBFS @ 1kHz
  • Frequency Response
  • SNR
The measurements DO NOT CHANGE from jitter.  The jitter has NO EFFECT on the DAC DAC's performance!  I think you will find the same with other high performance DACs.  I believe in my test equipment more than any rhetoric, conjecture, or hyperbole.

Also important is that all Cherry DAC DACs have multiple isolation, regulation, and filtering on internal power supplies.  This assures immunity to power supply fluctuations at least to +/-1Vpp!  That's AFTER it's regulated from an AC powered converter.  So there's no need for any power conditioners or an "improved power supply".  This is how well designed equipment works.  It is able to meet spec out of the box and without the need for any "fixes" like jitter removal or a better power supply.
