Any body using 8B ST (THX)for stereo music? How do u rate this amp? It is available used (1995 make)for about 1200 $? Whether the sound can be said to be good enough to justify buying a used one? How is its performance in bridged manner ? I intend to use it with bookshelf, like Quad 11L speakers.

bkm,

The 8B-ST is an excellent amp - I own an 8B-ST-Pro. I believe it would be a
good match with your speakers based on it's power output and the price of
your speakers. The SST amps are better in my opinion but I used an 8B-ST
for several years to listen to music. Each channel of the 8B-ST has enough power to
drive you quads, but if you want to experiment I would try bi-amping instead
of bridging.

Hi bkm,

Sorry I did not realize you were asking me specifically about the 8B - I thought you were asking the group for opinions.  Anyway I'm as biased as they get so yes the 8B is a great amp and in fact in bridged mode actually has less distortion than in normal 4 channel mode.

Obviously it will not sound as good as the current SST Squared models but depending on where and how your using it; it should sound very good indeed.

James,

I have been shopping for a used 4b-st, but have come across a deal  on a used 8b-st. How would an 8b-st bridged perform compared to a 4b-st. Thanks!

Hi

The 4B would be able to deliver more current into lower impedance. We usually do not recommend bridging a Stereo amplifier into any load below 8 ohms.
