Use of Industrial Felt on AV123 X-Static Speakers
« on: 17 Nov 2020, 01:04 pm »
Hello All, I hope this is the right place for this question. I recently bought a pair of X-Static and X-Voce center speaker. In my research on these I found an article where a reviewer added industrial felt to the back of the midrange drivers to help prevent ringing and improve overall sound especially at high volume.

Has anyone else done this on these? What are your thoughts if so? Seems to make sense but I don't want to glue something semi-permanent to my speakers unless there is a true improvement.

You might be better off putting acoustic panels or diffusers on the front wall behind the speakers.

That's a good idea. It's in the plan, but not implemented yet. I have bass traps in the corners nearby but may put a panel up behind each as well.

How far out from the wall do you have them?

The top half of the speaker is about 26" from the front wall.

Open baffle need to be at least 3', many prefer 5+ feet.

Thanks for the note on the 3' space. I'll see if I can make that work in my space. Any thoughts on the felt? Sounds like no one has done this.

I have 1/2" thick felt on the outside of the upper baffle of my X-Statiks.  It's audibly clearer.

Thanks for the comment S Clark. Do you mean on the very back round part or wrapped around the circumference, or both?

I put mine around the circumference of the upper baffle.

I took a strip of norez, took the foam off and put it around the circumference of the magnate. I can't tell you if it made a difference as I put them on before firing them up for the first time.

Not easy to see, but look close at the edge.  This photo from the Lone Star Audio Fest a few years ago.

To close the loop, I tried this with and without the felt. I liked the sound without the felt just a little better. Seemed a little cleaner, brighter, more airy sound. The difference was small but noticeable.

That said, I discovered a non-functioning bass unit in one of the speakers shortly after this test, so it may not be a fair test given that issues. I posted another thread about repairing the bass unit.
