Title: Intro from Chicago area
Post by: ogodei on 8 Sep 2022, 08:38 pm
Hi, intro post.

I've browsed AudioCircle in the past, usually the result of searches for info on prospective new gear. I think I used it as a primary site for info on the purchase of some Odyssey amps, for instance.  However since I’ve been more into headphones in the past I’ve felt I didn’t have much to add. I’m now getting deeper into two channel systems and the site is increasingly relevant, so posting.

I’m working several projects audio right now, primarily speaker builds and a couple of amp rebuilds. I’ll post a GR Research build over in that circle. My biggest project to date was a Covid-time build of a gear wall, pics below.  The sliding doors accommodate moving reflective, refractive or absorption panels to wherever sounds best (usually its right between the speakers).  The open grills shown in the pics now have absorptive panels installed behind them.

I essentially rotate between two setups; higher-efficiency speakers run from low wattage tubes or electrostatic speakers run from whatever. I’ve had a lot of different gears in house and still have too much, it's less a search for the bigger-better thing and more a desire to hear different sounds.   I’ll list only the most-used of my current stuff below.

Speakers: Klipsch Cornwall IV, Devore Orangutans, QUAD ESL 57, QUAD ESL 63, Magnepan 3.7i

SS amps:  Bryston 14B3, Yamaha B-2, FirstWatt F4, others

Tube amps:  Radford STA-25, DNA Stellaris, Shindo Sinhonia F2A, Shindo Lafon GM70, several other vintage

Pre-amps:  Shindo Masseto, Austin Audio Works Black Amp, Adcom GFP-750, multiple passive resistor-based preamps

Digital:  ROON or PS Audio Perfect Wave transport into Holo Audio May DAC

I also run vinyl, primarily from a VPI Classic IV or Garard 301 tt.

Looking forward to becoming more involved on the site.

Steve

How many hours are lasting the GM70s in your amp?

Thanks for the welcomes  :D

The Lafons were made around 2012 and I got them used in 2020.  Unknown hours on the tubes at that time but I haven't had any issues with them.  I've put maybe 300 hours on the amp since I've had it, I'm still looking for the perfect speaker match up.
