I run a miniDSP SHD primarily to manage a room mode.  The SHD has many features including output channel delays up to 30 ms.  Playing with this yesterday for the first time, I was completely blown away by the effect that even 1 ms has on imaging.
The center image of my setup is reasonably tight.  I’m sure it could be better, but a 1 ms delay in either channel results in an obvious shift off center but more noticeably the image completely falls apart, becoming quite diffuse.
I'm not sure if there is something very artificial about manipulating the timing in this way but it does make me wonder how we ever achieve image cohesion or stability in our setups if it is so sensitive.
