Question about speaker gasket, need it or not?
« on: 24 Sep 2020, 09:29 pm »
So, I got a Velodyne ULD12 sub that needed the surround to be re foamed.   I got it for free, so what the heck.  I bought and am performing the reform but it appears that the outer, hard cardboard gasket, is missing.  I was thinking finishing up the job, hooking it up and buy and install the gasket later.

Question,  is it necessary to have the gasket at all? Can I connect it up and put the gasket on later?  This would not harm the new surround, right?

TIA!

I would definitely wait for the gasket.  For one, unless the driver uses machine bolt inserts you damage the holes somewhat every time you secure the wood screws in the MDF.  Secondly you're unlikely to get a full seal without the gasket which can alter the response in unpredictable ways.   I'd imagine you'd not encounter any catastrophic failure if you had to put it in without the gasket, but is there a reason you have to?
