No, Shahid did not visit Brian at Whetstone.

I also noticed a difference in the first few days with the Neuance. The first day it really sucked, but improved tremendously by about the 4th day.

Ok, I read Phil's statement and while I think it make a tiny bit of sense I still am not buying it. I think its your ears that is breaking in. The test would be to compare two Neuance shelfs, one broken-in, one not.

Josh,

I was able to do it, as my first Neuance shelf- which I've used for 8 months under my p25 sounded significantly better on my transport than the brand new one. After about 4 days, the differences were smaller, though I'd still say the broken in one sounded better. Go figure.

But yeah, for anyone who believes maple is better than other types of wood for audio platforms, I don't think the idea of a constrained layered platform compressing/settling is that far of a stretch...

I'm in PhilNYC's Camp.

I think most guys that play guitar would agree that a new spruce flat-top acustic guitar improves with use and age. I always played new guitars as much as possible and even placed them on stands in front of a speaker so they could resonate with the various frequencies and hopefully speed up the brake in process. I admitt there is some debate on the speaker trick.

The more they are forced to resonate and the older they get the better they sound. I don't see why the same principles wouldn't apply to Neuance shelves to at least some degree.

The "break-in" phenomenon reported for Neuance is real and often not at
all
subtle.
The reasons largely amount to the rapid temperature and air pressure
changes
that occur with air transit and also to a smaller degree, how heavy the
component used and how it is installed(ie-supported on spikes, laying
flat
on a tabletop,etc).
The device is constructed as a torsion box operating in shear with a
multi-layered shell encasing a graduated density foam material in its
center.
What happens is that the air trapped inside the cells of the foam core
of
the device will expand at altitude during shipping and stress the
adhesive
bonds and laminates.
How each layer of the laminated shell makes contact with the next
adjacent
layer determines how smoothly and evenly that energy is passed onto the
core
where they are damped.
When it's first loaded by the weight of the component, the individual
layers
that make up the outer shell will be placed under stress, bind up and
then
gradually relax one layer at a time until all have equalised in
tension.Until all the layers have solid and even contact each other,
the
transfer and absorbtion may be spectrally uneven.
Thankfully, "break-in" is pretty much confined to the intial
installation
and typically takes only a few days. I've had a report of as long as 2
weeks
in the case of one particular shipment that went to New Zealand.Then
again,others have reported no notable "break-in" issues at all.

Ken Lyon is usually pretty good about responding to e-mails. We had a back and forth discussion about the Dynavector P-75 phono preamp a few months ago.
