Need more power than tpa3116
« on: 28 Feb 2016, 02:58 pm »
I have a smsl tpa3116 amp and love the way it sounds but want something with more power. I am not really into the day route but need something that would be small in form factor with more headroom. Any suggestions?

In the same boat.  Have a Fleawatt TPA-3116 and love it but looking for a little more.  I just ordered a Nuprime IDA 8. It looks spectacular on paper.

I have a couple questions for you:

What is your max budget?

Do you need an amp with volume control (integrated amp), or just a power amp? Can your DAC act as preamp for example?

I would like an all in one unit, volume and amp but not opposed to a pre amp to amp setup. My budget is around the $500 mark, but depending on setup that could be raised.

I would suggest the SMSL SA-98E which uses the 7498E chip.   I am using a 7498 board with my 84 db speaker and it is working fine.  BTW, I used 4 different versions of the TPA3116 amp boards and enjoy 2 of them very much.  Hope this helps.

How much power are you running into the TPA3116? At 12v it doesn't put out too much.

    2 × 50 W Into a 4-Ω BTL Load at 21 V (TPA3116D2)
    2 × 30 W Into a 8-Ω BTL Load at 24 V (TPA3118D2)
    2 × 15 W Into a 8-Ω BTL Load at 15 V (TPA3130D2)

I believe my power supply is pushing 19 v. Any recommendations of an upgraded power supply?

Well, given that you're at 19v you're not going to get a lot more power. It may appear that way going to 24v for 30w into 8hm but recall that from 15w to 30w it's only 3db gain. What is your speaker efficiency? You might find a better PSU is more pleasing, what do you use now? Is your TPA3116 stock? They don't perform particularly well without some rather good DC caps on them.

What is it about the headroom you desire?

There may be recommendation for amplifiers. The biggest issue is that in order to meet the $ requirement DIY is the best choice. The XLS does come to mind as an extremely affordable decent amplifier; however it surely prefers balanced inputs.

I am running Sierra 1's that are 86 db. My smsl is bone stock. The smsl sounds great at lower volumes but when turned up it seems like sonically it breaks up pretty quick.

The speaker is 8ohm. The most the TPA3116 will give is 30w. I'd recommend 100w.

Do you want or not want class D?

I have been impressed with the smsl class d characteristics, but I am not totally stuck to class d.

TPA3116 can be configured as a mono with double the power.

It has more current capabilities as a mono, but to get higher watts you need lower ohm rating of speakers. So it won't work in this case.

If you can wait, I think the TPA3251 (or one of the related chips) will probably pass the tpa311x as the "go to" class-D chip for high value (i.e. good price/performance ratio) and decent power specs... The summary of that diyAudio thread I just linked is that there are a few folks currently working on PCBs, I think group buys probably aren't too far off.  Depending on who does the board, the degree of DIY could be anywhere from "board + bag of parts" to something that just needs to be put in a case and wired to a power supply.  But once those get out, I'm betting you'll start seeing various copies, clones and other plug-n-play amps like the SMSL.  How long of a wait?  Hard to say, I'm already waist-deep in speculation, but just to dive in all the way, I'll say six months.

If you don't want to wait for an unknown amount of time: look for a good implementation of the irs2092 chip.  The company "Class D Audio" makes some nice units and are the topic of this thread: $175 Class D amp--120 wpc.  They have both fully-assembled amps, as well as populated boards and power supplies for the DIY route.  You can save even more going DIY with the stuff from China (ebay, taobao, aliexpress, etc).  See this diyAudio thread 200W IRS2092 Amp for $20 for an example of getting quite a bit of power on the cheap.

You can buy one now. My Antipole would go very well with this.

Unlike other TI eval boards this has good inductors for the output on it. It appears to be pretty good quality. But once versions come out from other manufacturers price will drop below $100.

Recent 3116 history shows that people think some parts of a TI EVM can easily be improved and it may be TI's intention to make it look that way :)

Check out the Vista Audio circle.  The well regarded Ampino (integrated) may offer enough power for $500.
