Boston-area meetup?
« on: 6 Feb 2008, 12:23 am »
Hi all,

Hopefully this isn't too much initiative to take on my very first post, but would anyone be interested in meeting in or near Boston these days?  I'm just starting out and I don't know any locals who share the bug, so I'd really love to meet some folks and hear new things.  I'm happy to volunteer my modest apartment in Boston's Jamaica Plain, or I could travel elsewhere.  I'm a 25 year old law student, so I don't have a laundry list of expensive gear to offer.  I do have good scotch and beer, and the following budget system:

Denon DCD-1650AR CDP--> Rotel RX-975 receiver as a pre--> Odyssey Stratos stereo w/ cap upgrade--> Dynaudio Audience 52 speakers.  Cables are unterminated Speltz anticables and crappy Monster/no-name interconnects.  I've also ordered an Odyssey Candela, which should ship within a week or two.

Who's in?

Josh

I tend toward the peatier stuff--currently I have bottles of Talisker 10-year, Laphroaig 15, and Lagavulin 16.  As far as the more balanced stuff goes, I have Strathisla 12, and I just killed a bottle of Highland Park 12.  The HP was killer, and I'll probably get another bottle soon.

Where are you located, spwal?

Josh,

Nice intro to Audiocircle  :thumb:
Good scotch is a great way to make some new friends.
Boston is a little far, but for Laphroaig and Talisker.....

Give the Walmart/Lowes speaker cable a try.  It is definitely better than the Speltz in my system.

Thanks, Brad!  I know Houston is quite a ways away, but if you're ever in the neighborhood, you're welcome to stop by.  Thanks for the tip on cables--at that price, I can afford a quick experiment.

Now about you New Englanders?  Anyone want to come over here or host their own gathering?

Not to hijack my own thread, but Brad, you were absolutely right about the Lowes White Lightning cables.  I don't have much to compare them to, but they certainly beat the ACs in my system.

Who wants to come over and hear it?  aa

I would be happy to host a meeting at my home-based shop anytime. I'm in Winchester which is 7 miles north of Boston and accessible by car or commuter rail. I have a couple of 2-channel rooms and one multi-channel/HT room.

Regards,
Patrick

P.S. Not a big single malt drinker, but my bottle of Oban is always available.

Great to see that this circle is still alive.  I apologize, as the admin I should be more proactive in the pursuit of gatherings.

JTG, welcome to audiocircle.  I'm 25 myself, not much of a scotch guy, I can't handle it.  Vodka is my beverage of choice.

Let's get something going, to my knowledge we have only had one gathering since this circle's birth.  Count me in on the next one.

I was just over at Patrick's (Boston High End) this past weekend.  I think it would make a great location for a meetup; he's got some interesting equipment, plenty of room, the shop is (rather) centrally located, and he has Oban!  What do you folks think?  Saturday March 15th perhaps?  Patrick, are you available that day?  I'll bring the bourbon!  aa

oh yes, i remember this thread now!  sorry bout not getting back to you.  huge fan of the lagavulan and laphroaig, the well has just run dry and i cant rationalize spending that $ on the good stuff -- so white horse will have to do for now.

this would be great if we could do it over in winchester!

can we hammer out a final itinerary sooner than later?

thanks

spwal

Just thinking out loud --

I can bring my

Bel Canto DAC3
Melos SHA-1
Audiosector Super Patekclone
Mini Junkyard DIY Aleph (possibly for sale on the spot)
MAC Palladium cables

If you know how to set it up easily, i can bring my Red Wine Audio SB2 as well...

Those should make people happy.

Oh sts9 -- can you bring your usb HDD please and someone gonna have a laptop?  I would love to rip some (legal) shows off you if you got them in .flac.  I will bring my HDD.

thanks!
