HQPlayer 5 Desktop 5.0.0 released!
Several new filters and modulators, extended source content analysis and output metering, new CUDA offload capabilities, metring display in Client, GUI improvements, RaspberryPi4 supported as a new platform.

HQPlayer 5 Embedded 5.0.0 released!
Several new filters and modulators, extended source content analysis and output metering, new CUDA offload capabilities.

I have been listening to the new HQPlayer5 Desktop for the last couple of days and the improvements and clarity is amazing. Jussi has refined a lot of the upsampling code, added new filters and modulators including:
- gauss-MG
- gauss-MGa
- sinc-short
- sinc-medium
- sinc-long
- poly-sinc-gauss-halfband
- ASDM7EC-light
- ASDM7EC-super
- ASDM7ECv3

I am using ASDM7EC-light to upsample to DSD256 and it sounds fantastic along with less load on the CPU. My fanless music server only has an Intel i7-9700 and will max out trying to upsample to DSD512 but with the new modulators it may work. I'll give it a try after the shakedown cruise and see if any bugs pop up, so far the new release is rock solid.

Thanks for the review.  I am going to have to try HQ player again.  Previously, I found it very good but no better than Audirvana and not nearly as good as Bug Head Infinity Blade.  And for those of you who are using JRiver, give HQ Player or Audirvana a try and find out what you have been missing.

I just downloaded the trial for HQP 5.0

I have not had time to mess around with different settings but so far so good.  It sounds just as good as Audirvana and maybe a little better.  I need more time with it.  There may be a little more detail and sense of space but it is slight if it is there.  5.0 is definitely and improvement of previous versions.

I will probably buy it.

I wonder if it will work with Linux?

Yes. I have read Linux users can use more demanding filters and modulators than Windows but that might have evened out with the new v.5.

You will have to really know Linux to install HQPlayer. I believe there is a Linux/HQPlayer distro that will run from a thumbdrive. A high powered computer and lots of reading will be required.

Does HQP work with streaming audio via browser?  I just googled and found maybe it works with VB Audio's ASIO Bridge but don't know whether anyone has first hand experience.  I have used Jplayer with ASIO Bridge but Jplayer freezes quite often so stopped using it.

You will have to join AudiophileStyle and ask the hive mind.

WGH,

Good that HQP5 is worth the wait. I’ll upgrade once I switch over to Linux, I’m currently on Windoze but should have my server upgraded this summer.

Keep the good info coming…

Best,
Anand.

I am using an I-7 6700K and 16gb of 3200mHz DDR4 ram to upsample to DSD without any problems.  After trying various filters, I found that some are excellent and others not so good.  Overall, this version does sound better than Audirvana.  The sound stage is huge and there is excellent air and transparency.  Detail is just slightly better than Audirvana but it is splitting hairs.
