Jim Oade was impressed with the 2000ES once they have heard it. They also tried to do some mods but they were unfamiliar with the internal chips and desisted of the idea.

The chips are the new BB DSD-1751 and the unit has 3 of them.

Notice that the 555ES is a DVD/CD/SACD unit and the 2000ES is just a CD/SACD unit. The 2000ES has no video capabilities.

Regarding to the performance, I believe Dan should come with a good explanation and reccomendation after comparing the units.

At $295 ( from Oade), the 2000Es is a great buy.

The 2000ES is intriguing.

The 2000ES does look very promising.  I am also looking into a 775 from Sony.

I will share my impressions soon.

I have listened to both briefly and can say that the mods potentil for both is high, given their internal design.

We completed the 775 and I was actually quite impressed with the results.  The mods were relatively straightforward, with upgraded op-amps, improvements to the power supply, etc., but the unit turned out exceptionally well and I may pursue it in January.  We are just slammed at the moment and I still have to finish the Denon 3910 mods.

Thanks,

Dan

Take care,

Jose.

I have finished the 2000ES mods and they turned out well.  I have been uncertain about whether we have time to offer them on an on-going basis or not.

It is a great unit and represents a remarkable value.

If there is enough interest, I will consider offering the mods.  Please post here if you are interested.

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks Dan.

How would you describe the performance of the stock and after-mods units compared to other cheap brands ? Against the stock 999?

Interested in the 2000.

Type and costs of mods would be of great help in finalizing the choice of doing it or not - Translated:  Money Manger Wife approval....

Mods for this unit start at $300 for 2CH upgrades.

It is very good for the money. I can't say that it is better than the 999ES, but it is very good.

Thanks,

Dan

Gracias Dan:

Did you mean, a modified 2000ES against a stock 999ES ? or against a basic modded 999ES?

Dan is it possible to start off with the "Basic 999ES Signature Truth Mod" and possibly have it upgraded to "Gold Level" at a later date as funds become available?

I have another system for Red Book and I don't need it for DVD playback. Sounds like the 2000ES would work fine unless the 999ES is substantially better on SACD. Also I won't have to get up to change SACDs so often with 5 loaded SACDs. (I tend to listen to one or two cuts per SACD.)

I had been looking for a balanced unit. Not sure is this can be added cost effectively.

If you use headphones and don't need a dedicated amplifier for them, the 2000ES add a headphone jack too. This unit plays only CD/SACD and has no video circuitry inside.

I have to admit that wasn't sure about the 5 disc changer, but once you use it, it turns to be a nice future and you can play any format as you wish. I also found that the shuffle play is very quick.

All in all, at $249-300 ( from Oade Bros) it is a great unit. I bet Dan could turn it into something very special with some mods ( even better that the already good unit).

I am the owner of the Sony 2000es that Dan modified. I like the player so muchthat I bought two of them. The modded player sounds better in my main system than than the player that I was using, a Rega Jupiter transport (old style) and Perpetual Technology P-1 andP-3 (also modified by Dan.) The Perpetual Technology/Rega does sound better in my other system which uses Hornshoppe speakers. I like the modded 200es better on SACD than an unmoddedSCD-777es that I may sell since I got the 2000es. Dan does great work.   Just my opinion.
