Without a doubt, Wishbone Ash - F.U.B.B. from the 1974 release, There's the Rub. Andy Powell on his Flying V and Laurie Wisefield simply cook on this 9+ minute track. The track is filled with great doubling throughout, and then the song builds to a tremendous crescendo of searing call and response solos towards the end.

F.U.B.B. is a good one.
I told my guitar teacher that I wanted to learn it back in '74 and that was pretty much the end of my lessons, he never scheduled another one.

I think I'll put on Live Dates 2 right now, Andy Powell is still going with a Flying V shaped guitar to this very day.
His hair disappeared somewhere along the way, though.

Pat Metheny. Third Wind…

So hard to choose, but this too would be my choice.

While this video is not Pat himself, it’s the best demo of the incredible fret work Metheny put into this solo.  :thumb:

Cool thread!

My ideas this morning are completely different than when I first saw this yesterday. Tomorrow will be no different.

Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4

Or every single solo by all three guitarists on this:

I am going to see them the middle of May. I think there are only two original members now.

I am embarrassed I didn't think of this before but some of the best soloing ever has to be by Michael Schenker on "Electric Phase". To me UFO's pinnacle of playing.

I'm going for something harder: Ozzy Osbourne, Over the Mountain solo by Randy Rhoads.

There’s so many!! And I agree with so many already mentioned! I’m going to add one to the mix.

Rick Derringer’s solo on “Back in the U.S.A.” from Edgar Winter’s Roadwork Album.

It can't be a thread about great guitar solos without mentioning Eddie Van Halen's Eruption.

Or any of Santana's many insane solos on Lotus.

Or Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs.

Robert Fripp on "Fracture" from King Crimson's Starless & Bible Black album. Just incredible guitar, very well complemented by the band. Check out the variety of inspired versions on YouTube if you're into it.

One that I've never forgotten was on TV several years ago: a Rock and Roll Hall of Fane show that included George Harrison's posthumous introduction.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps was played by a number of musical luminaries, including Prince.  Prince's solo was absolutely amazing.

I have the Concert for George, and also saw this again a couple weeks ago while at the Rock and Roll HOF in Cleveland, they had it playing in a theater there. One thing they did in the theater at the RnRHOF is the put bass shakers under the seats as well. Very cool experience, but this has to be a top 3-5 guitar solo of all time.
