Oppo UPD-203 Mods!
« on: 11 Dec 2016, 12:19 am »
Hi guys, I am thinking of a lower cost mod for the UPD-203, that may be SS.

Please let me know who is interested and how they intend to use this unit.

Thanks!

Dan

Dan, I definitely will be getting one for a spare HT where I have a 4K TV. I currently have a BDP-103D in there. While I use it more for HT, I do have a hard drive attached to it that includes hi-res files, including 2-channel and multi-channel DSD. I also on occasion access files from my NAS as the library is much larger.

Dan - don't really do disc playback these days (unless someone comes over).  I still have my Modwright (solid state modded) BDP-83 in the upstairs bonus room with a pair of GR Research N3s.

I would be curious..
Have been contemplating a Bryston BDA3 DAC fed by a universal that can output DSD via HMDI.
But a modded 203 might do the trick instead.
I'd be using for 2 channel primarily, with occasional duty in my theatre system for BD and multi channel.

The 203 will have the latest Sabre DAC and my intent is for it to be a great player AND DAC via digital inputs for DSD, etc.  A one box solution for all is the plan!

Thanks,

There are 3 different versions of the new Sabre DAC chip; which one will the 203 have?  The Sonica is supposed to have the top-of-the-line 9038 Pro, but on-line speculation has been that the 203 would have the lesser 9028?

Unless Oppo has changed their mind earlier press releases said the unit was going to feature the AKM 4458 DAC chip.

That's my understanding as well - http://www.trustedreviews.com/oppo-udp-203-review

Maybe Dan has this mixed up with the upcoming 205.  The 203 is really a replacement for the 103 and I am sure it will just have a switching power supply like the 103 and no normal direct DAC digital inputs.   The AKM 8 channel DAC should be more capable than the Cirrus they used in the 103 but the serious audio player will be the new 205 which is rumored to have the new ESS DACs in it......and why wouldn't they....they are already using them in the about to be released Sonica DAC and also have already started to use them in their latest portable headphone/DAC jobbie.

Information on the 203 is now on the Oppo site.  $549.  Taking preorders soon:

https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-203/blu-ray-udp-203-Images.aspx

The above internal pic shows the switching power supply and the AKM DAC in the middle of the multichannel output board and all the output op amps plus coupling caps on the input and output of all the channels (coupling caps not needed....the usual Oppo silliness).

The video on this thing could be killer.  There is a video on the site as well.  I imagine about 2-3 months before the 205 arrives but who knows.

Hi Ric, I had forgotten about the fact that the UDP-203 will not use the Sabre DAC, as the 103 does not either.

Yes of course the 205 will have the latest Sabre DACs in it.

Thanks for the link and pics Ric!

The SMPS is unfortunate and I agree about the coupling caps.

Got this email from Oppo support earlier today:

"Yes, we are anticipating releasing the UDP-205 by early-2017. "

I'd think just like the 103 and the 105 that the 205 probably makes more sense to mod.  Not sure what the 205 will go for but the 203 was $549.  So by the time one gets thru with mods it may approach the cost of the 205.  Mine will be used more for video.  I have a main system and a back-up system for audio.  I'd also think that the upcoming Sonica DAC may even be a better candidate for mods for people buying it for audio only (unless they need a disc spinner).

Hi Phil, that is typically why I have always only modified the higher end Oppos.

The Sonica DAC is of interest, but I don't know how many people JUST want a DAC.

The Marantz SA8005 is a CD/SACD player WITH spdif, toslink and USB DAC inputs for up to DSD2!  And it sounds FANTASTIC as DAC and player with our mods!

Thanks,

Dan

And more than likely Marantz will have an SA8006 around CES give or take.  They have recently announced the CD6006 (which also has a USB input) - http://us.marantz.com/us/products/pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=hificomponents&ProductId=CD6006  and an SA10 - http://us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=ReferenceSeries&SubCatId=&ProductId=SA10

Now THIS is the player that we have been waiting for!  Those interested, please let us know, in order to get in on our early customer discount.  I will likely offer a tiered discount structure for the first ten customers, similar to what we did for the Marantz mods.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I just received my 203 on Sunday and installed it yesterday.  Watched a few episodes of G.O.T. Season 6 on BluRay so far and it does produce really nice video.  In my case, it will be used 99% of the time for HT video, streaming services and related to a JVC movie projector.  If there is a modular, linear ps being considered as a drop in/plug and play ps that would improve overall performance, I would be interested in that.

Thanks
