This wonderful little power amp came out nicer in the production version than we had even expected.

It sounds great with my 83dB Philharmonic Three speakers.

It would be tough to fit a good preamp in the remaining space available in the new SET 120. It would need a low voltage power transformer and regulated power supply, the class A discrete line amplifier circuit board, plus controls and switches.

A much better choice would be simply pairing the SET 120 power amp with our new Vision RB preamp ($899). They have the same footprint and will stack and match, with the power amp on top.

It would cost us at least as much to shoehorn a preamp section into the SET 120 chassis so this pair is a much better value.

I am intrigued by this amplifier.
What are the advantages of a single-ended design such as this vs. a traditional push-pull amplifier?
Tempted to give this a try - it would for sure be the only one in my country (South Africa).
Perhaps the first AVA component here ever.

Advantages of the single ended voltage gain section, no crossover distortion at all. Plus the design made it easier to keep the complexity of the regulated power supplies down so it lowered production cost and therefor more amplifier for your money.

Comparing this to a Class D amplifier? No comparison, the AVA Vision SET 120 and Vision SET 400 will make they typical Class D amp sound pretty dull.

Order both and keep the one that sounds best. AVA at least offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

sound pretty dull ? Holy moly them is strong words. D amps are ( my intel only ) said to be very fast and lively. I could be wrong like your financial advisor says to you walking out the door. Call me interested indeed. Will this amp pare up nicely to your best pre ? I love preamps with tubes.

2Bigears, I have heard this amps more powerful version at Franks and it is the real deal. Awesome sounding amp. I also own some AVA gear and it is built to last.

Pair that amp with his top of the line preamp and you will have one sweet sounding system.

Larry - will you get a chance to review a Vision SET amp? Give me a reason to update my almost 6 year old Synergy 450 (or wait for v2.0).

Will there be an upgrade for Synergy 450 or only a replacement to improve? Not so sure an improvement of my 450 would go as far as an improvement of my Insight+ EC pre would.

Am seriously considering a trade in of my Insight+ EC pre for something better. Heck, all I use is 2 inputs, 1 output , and none of the switches/extended features of it. Kinda feature overkill expense that would be better spent on better internal circuitry.
