What are your thoughts of allowing fans to record concerts?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Only Grateful Dead made this generous gesture of freedom and it didn't make them poorer, on the contrary increased their fame with the fans.

Most (all?) of the current jam band groups have followed in the footsteps of the GD and openly allow or encourage live taping, and many other artists and groups don’t act against it (i.e., allow it if it is subtle and not bothering other concertgoers).  It is possible or even likely that seeing how important live taping was to the popularity of the GD other musical artists have decided to either encourage it or at least turn a blind eye.

More bands should allow it.  I've been downloading live shows in lossless format (.shn and then .flac) since the late 90s.  A huge number of bands allow taping and trading of their shows.

This website has been funky lately, but it's an attempt to track all sources in circulation.

How would you approach taping in the current era?

How would you approach taping on keeping it authentic? It seems that there are millions of jerk-offs with phones, who are more interested in the moment (or their social media), then the actual concert experience.

Some bands sell taper only tickets which are for a section directly behind the soundboard.

You can also tape "stealth" with mics attached to a hat or use a short mic stand in front of the board (FOB).  Nobody really tapes whole shows with a cell phone, and if they did, I don't think anyone would even bother acquiring or listening to them.  I may listen to a live stream via cell phone to get a general idea of what's going on, but the sound is usually pretty bad.  I have heard some half-decent live streams, though.

This is because the proper URL is https://etreedb.org/db/shows/browse/artist.   The old db.etree site has not been updated for years.

Thanks!  It's been years since I've gone there!
