Mixed feelings about Friday Night because- as good as it is- sometimes the hotdoggery becomes so off-the-charts that it gets in the way of the music IMHO. Like a movie that the only thing you can think of to say about it was "The special effects were great."
I remember reading elsewhere that Coryell was originally to be one of the trio for the tour but had a drug problem at the time and was replaced with di Meola because of it.
Great article and great that the tapes were successfully transferred. Really sad how much musical history has been lost in ways like this; apparently a lot of Coltrane studio tapes were simply tossed to reclaim storage space. 😢
