C&C Speaker Stands
« on: 4 Oct 2021, 06:12 pm »
I'm looking for advice on a new speaker stand purchase.  Currently, I have Elac UB5's but would like to find a pair of "universal" speaker stands that I can use for other, similar bookshelf, speakers down the road.

What's a good stand height to look for?

I am leaning towards Monoprice's 28" Monolith, but I was not impressed by their Elements stands and am wondering if there are better alternatives.

Thanks for any input!!

Ideally the height should put the tweeter at your ear level (listening position)

I have found that 32" stand height is good for smaller to medium bookshelf speakers when sitting on a chair or sofa.  But measure to see where the tweeter sits for sure.

I've heard good things about the monolith stands, otherwise there's the Pangea ones from AA. Also good from what I've heard but one is a little lighter wight, the other is similar to the monolith but more expensive.

A few very positive YT reviews on Monoprice / Monolith stands.  Look identical to Panagea but much cheaper.   Personally, I would not hesitate to get these.

Check out the DIY TNT Stubby

I've built these twice, they work quite well. I like using 4" pipe, a bit more stable. My neighbor is still using them. :)

ask around for somebody that can weld, and then build your own. Not rocket science! Leave a hole under the speaker, and fill it with cat litter. The put a strip of duc tape over the hole.

You can buy steel or aluminum cut to length, and the same for the bottom and top plates.

I just picked up the 20" Pangea ones. Not bad, but just like anything you get what you pay for. Only the 20" has a bigger 6x9 top plate, the taller sizes are all 6x6. I'll probably make a bigger top plate to modify. Other than that it's not a bad gig. Haven't filled them yet but I will be for sure. I bought them to go with an impending set of GR Research NX-Studios which are pretty tall for bookshelf monitors and I'll have them in some Isoacoustic Orea pods, so that's why I decided on the shorter ones. That stack will already be about 40" tall and my couch is pretty short.

For temporary stands can't beat stacked cinder blocks with 2x8 spacers if the thought of vibrations get to you or you "need" to tweak the stand height.  It's cheap, heavy, and stable.

For nicer stands build wooden plinths with wide bases and removable tops.  I ordered such from TimberNation with black satin lacquer bases/tops for large monitors, looked stunning, reasonably priced, and held 50 pounds of play sand each.
