Parasound amps for Larger Sub

Hello again, fellow ACer's.  As a complete neophyte re/subs and amps to drive them, I again need your input.  I have been reading that the VMPS Larger Sub  (and probably most subs) like to be driven with high current amps.  That said, any thoughts about using a Parasound HCA-2200 Mk. II to drive the sub, either in bridged mono or stereo (one channel to the 12" driver, the other channel to the 15" driver)?  Or, would I be better off going with a (gasp) pro amp like a QSC?  Thanks.

Bill

Hi,

If you already have the Parsound you should be fine. Either is a good amp for the sub.

I am actually thinking about the J1 with the carver z pro to biamp whatever I get. And possibly using one of the carvers for the sub.

Brian Cheney uses a QSC amp for his Larger sub.

So do I :)

I use the DCA-3422, bridged, driving both woofers on my Larger sub.

I also use the QSC DSP-4 to handle any EQ needs in the digital domain.

There are a few folks around this site who have heard this set-up at the Midwest Audio Fest. It has all the power and extension AND versatility that most could want.

Wayne,

What's the MSRP on that QSC DSP?  Can it be used w/ any QSC amps?  Also, even after reading about it, I'm not quite sure what it does. . .do you still need a separate equalizer for your sub?

Thanks!

There's also one or two of us that heard the QSC Amp & DSP combo of Waynes at VSAC.

Impressive it was. And I wouldn't have known there was a fan in it as there was no fan noise from the quieter fan Wayne installed in it.

I believe the DSP-4 retails for around $600.00.

Search on google and I think you might be able to get a better price.

The DSP-4 can do more things than most will ever need.

It has multiple parametric EQs that allow you to vary the frequency, Q, and gain. It can also be used as a crossover with anywhere from 6-24 db per octave slope.

It can be used with ANY amplifier with some adaptors and an external power supply. It plugs right into the QSC amps that have a DataPort input.

It does need to be interfaced with a computer for set-up. After you set the EQ, it is saved in the DSP-4. It is a fairly friendly program to use. It is very handy to use with a Real Time Analyzer program. That way you can easily SEE where your room peaks and valleys are and where to set the EQ. You can then see what it takes to get a flat responce.

Here is a link to the RTA software I have used the most.

The simplest version is a free download.

BTW Larry,

I have a client here in Denver who is using a pair of Parasound JC-1s for his FST, TRT, RM-40s and a modded Marchand XM-44 to crossover to a Larger Sub. He is using an Aragon 4004 MK II to drive the Larger.

It does sound VERY good.

Here are some of his comments: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=5627

The QSC amp/eq combo is killer with the Larger. I have heard Waynes setup quite a few times and have never found it lacking. Indeed, Wayne is a man who enjoys his bass. :D

Thanks Wayne,

I guess he likes his system now????

There has been so much positive press on the Halo c2 and c1 and the newer amps that it just seems it would go well with the VMPS.

Now off to sleep ..flying with the family to Maroc Island Fl. in the am.

I will see you at CES.

Wayne, what's the fan you used to replace the stock fan in the QSC?  Thanks.
