You must have clicked the Update button because Windows 1909 is a manual update, Windows no longer does automatic version updates. 1909 is big and does a lot of housekeeping during the install, allow 12 hours or overnight. During the install Windows may look like is frozen, stalls at 37%, hangs at a restart screen or other such nonsense, don't freak out, let it do it's thing which is why overnight is best, that way you are not hovering, worrying and checking the progress. 24 hours does seem extreme but maybe your internet connection was slow that day.

My brother got tired waiting for the update to finish too so, like you, he turned off his computer.
What followed was a week of blue screens and failed attempts to roll back.
Finally after a dozen or more restarts Windows finally decided to do a repair on it's own then download and install 1909. He almost aborted the update again (slow learner) but I convinced him to wait and his computer is working fine again.

v1909 has installed perfectly on my 3 computers: a music server using an Intel Pine Trail D with an Atom D525 processor, a 2008 Toshiba Satellite M305D laptop with an AMD Turon processor, and a i7 based tower computer. Windows 1909 seems very adaptable and stable.

Good luck.

Happened to me as well went I turned off laptop. It read" updating do not turn off" lasted for some time. Turned laptop off thinking it was finished and had a hard time getting back to normal. All good now no thanks to my lacking computer knowledge.

1909 took a while to install. At first I thought something was wrong because my wallpaper was missing, but it's been fine. Don't panic, just install and be happy.

Make sure you disconnect any external devices, such as a USB DAC or SD memory cards before you update.
I was having all sorts of problems, blank screen, flashing display during the update, then I tried again with nothing connected to my NUC except the display, mouse, and keyboard
and it worked, but took a couple of hours.

Hope this helps. TW

Just located what was installed in that large 24hs update.
Why Intel are installing in my PC in beyond me.

That's probably the HDMI video driver.  My laptop uses an nVidia chipset and drivers for its built-in display.  But when an external monitor is hooked up via HDMI, apparently the nVidia chip doesn't handle that, but it's instead handled by Intel hardware and drivers.  I'm not sure whether that's a separate Intel chip or if it's built into the CPU.  The Intel video driver also includes the Intel HDMI sound driver.  For instance, when I look under "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager, I see two devices: Realtek and Intel Display Audio.  The former is the analog audio, and the latter is HDMI audio.  When I connect an external HDMI monitor with built-in speakers, the Windows default sound device switches over to the Intel HDMI device and sound comes from the external monitor's speakers.

I'd like to know why anyone at Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to have a 12+ hour update (and not break it up into multiple smaller updates)...and why even very complex updates from Apple take less than 90 minutes (which is another reason why people get addicted to their Apple products)!

Going ahead with this install while I can monitor it. Took less than 15 minutes to do the “Check” and “Download”. Installing now. Seems to be progressing reasonably well. 12% done in 2 minutes. Processor is an i7 with 8 GB RAM - nothing too fancy.

We’ll see....

*******EDIT/UPDATE*******

Started at 07:14, had computer running again at 07:58. Less than 45 minutes. Doesn’t seem unreasonable to me......

FRM, I don’t know what kind of computer you have but as I recall the update did not take anywhere near 12 hours. Also I can’t help but wonder why you’re only getting to it now? The update was released back in December last year.

I got the update some time in January. It took less than an hour, no issues. My computer is a 4 year old Dell laptop.
