A nice mention of our giveaway (and the sound of our room!) in Stereophile's coverage of the Backert Labs / Martin Logan room at Capital AudioFest.

(2nd item down)

Can anybody tell us what LP that was?   Hard to see with the camera flash glare.

A bit of info:

Sonics
The sonic focus of the new $2,995 preamp that is the subject of the September Preamp Giveaway:  live sound.  So, rhythm.  Dynamics.  Excitement, when called for.  Beauty.

Sound quality that is extremely close to its big brother, the Rhythm 1.1, which caused NewRecordDay.com to announce: "You want this.  Trust me - you want it bad."

In Through the Out Door
It has 3 RCA inputs, and 1 XLR input.  2 RCA outputs, and 1 XLR output.  It is single-ended.  It also has a home theater bypass, and a REC OUT for sending a full strength signal to a CD recorder or headphone amp.

Tubes and Caps
The interior is kept simple.  One gain stage only, using the lowest-gain tube that is commonly found, the 12au7, so that negative feedback is not required, and so users can "tube roll" with ease.  The handy see-through tube access door helps with this -- no tools are necessary to access the tubes.  The unit's overall gain is 9dB.  Capacitors are minimized, for example, the entire power supply AND regulator together have less than 3uF total.  Most engineers will tell you this is impossible. The filament supply uses additional uF.

I Have The Powerrrrrr.....
Pure Class A design.  Yet uses less electricity than a 25W light bulb.  It has our patented GreenForceTM power supply, so the music signal-carrying power supply capacitors are high quality polypropylene, rather than typical electrolytic caps.  Toroidal transformer.  HEXFRED diodes (only the best).  Uses an IEC inlet instead of a captive power cord, allowing power cord experimentation.  Easily convertible to 230V.

The Hits Keep Coming
Designed and built in USA.  Remote volume control.  Mute switch.  Faceplate machined from solid aluminum.  RCA jacks sturdy and generously spaced so no interconnect will ever be a problem.  No screws or fasteners visible to the user, except for our handy tube access door.  No ugly ventilation slats visible (although we do get ventilation done).  The tubes are so minimally stressed that the tube access door which is directly above them barely gets warm.

The new Backert Labs __________________________.  What would you call it?

"Sound:  there were some really good rooms...Backert, Lou and Jim's rooms..."

Thanks to klaus@odyssey for the kind words - the Backert Labs room at Cap AudioFest had Kismet monos in Stratos cases, and people asked about them as much as they asked about our new preamp!

Free $3K tube preamp giveaway... all you have to do is name it

It's a tremendous preamp.  I had it inhouse for a few weeks or so and loved it.  Bass control and clarity are two of its best characteristics.

Thanks for the kind words Ted.  He was talking about our $7,500 model, the Rhythm 1.1.  As we've said, the new $2,995 model that is the subject of the naming contest comes very close to the Rhythm.   :o

Nice preamp but sad that Canadians are not eligible to enter the contest.

We are sorry! Unfortunately the laws of each country / province / state are different, and giveaways are regulated in unpredictable ways, so we could not extend beyond the U.S.  If we tried, the real giveaway would be to the lawyers, lol.  Guys in Rhode Island also cannot enter, because they have legal registration and reporting requirements that we didn't want to run afoul of.  In all these cases - we are truly very sorry!

Some words about our new (unnamed) baby....

From EnjoyTheMusic.com....  “I sure like the idea of bringing such a good sounding and looking preamp down under $3,000…”

From PartTimeAudiophile... "clearly and obviously in that Best-In-Show category…"

From Stereophile... "I met the amiable Andy Tebbe. I told him the sound in his room was exceptionally inviting and I asked him (bluntly), 'Why is that?' Of course he blamed the preamp...."

Wow, we just received this... the first reaction we have gotten to the new preamp from a reviewer listening in his own systems....

"Just about a year ago I had the great pleasure of reviewing for hometheaterreview.com the Backert Labs reference Rhythm 1.1 preamplifier. The 1.1 rivaled the performance of my personal reference, the Concert Fidelity-080 which retails for $24,000, in all sonic parameters. I thought then the 1.1 was one of the great “unknown” bargains at its $7,500 retail price.

Well, a short while ago I got a phone call from Andy Tebbe who was very excited about their new “baby” preamp, which retails for $2,995, which he believed delivered a big whopping dosage of the sonic performance of the Rhythm 1.1. In the last few weeks, in three different systems, I compared the performance of the “baby” preamp to five solid state and tube based preamplifiers. The least expensive of these cost 7K and the most expensive was 24K. Not only did it hold its own in comparison to these highly regarded and much more costly line stages, it was quite better than three of them, and was on the same level as the best of the overall group. When I write the formal review for HTR I’ll give all the details regarding the specifics of why this new Backert Labs preamp knocked my sonic socks off across the board. If the Rhythm 1.1 is one of the greatest bargains of high-end audio, it is not hyperbole to say the new “baby” preamp might be the best deal in high-end gear of the 21st century!

Yep, Teajay (Terry) and I talk every day, and he's been over the moon about this baby for some time.  He had it over to a dealer buddy's place the other day and they tube rolled considerably, and each time it shined.  Congrats.
