Title: What new games have you bought lately?
Post by: jqp on 11 Nov 2003, 03:04 pm
I just bought 4 new XBox games this month:

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder
This is really fun. Realistic squad/solo multiplayer fighting on XBox Live!

Outlaw Voleyball
Not just a pretty face...when you get bored you can "beat your opponent senseless" using all the dirty tricks. Pez? Havent played this one yet

Grand Theft Auto (x2) - 2pack for the price of one! Haven't ever played these games yet (original and vice city).

Hehe... I hope you enjoy GTA as much as I have.  I havn't gotten into Vice City as much b/c my videocard needs upgrading.  But both are excelent games.

As for me I havn't purchaced any new games recently.  But for the first time in a while I have some on my wish list (besides the usual HL2 and Halo2  )  Mario Kart DoubleDash!! comes out next week I believe and F-Zero GX is already out.  Mario Kart is one of my alltime favorite games so I have been really looking foward to it.

I've been licking my chops for this one!

New games:  Top Spin, Rainbow Six, and Crimson Skies on Xbox.
Mario Golf, SSX3, and F Zero GX on Gamecube.

Well, I prepaid MK DD a couple of months ago. So I think I'm right there with 'ya!

Got the broadband adapters a month or so back for multi-cube hookup (we've got 2 in the house so far). Will be running the networking cable this weekend. Just got in a new Wavebird (Japanese exclusive model) as I didn't have 4 controllers for my 'cube. And thinking of setting up a third 'cube setup as well...

Other recent purchases have been F-Zero GX ('cube), & Midtown Madness 3 ('box). Haven't really messed with MM3 yet. Seems alright, just haven't felt motivated yet. At least it was only a $20 game.

Is Midtown Madness 3 Xbox live capable?  For $20, that's a good pick up!

Yeah, MM 3 is Live capable. And it was only $20 because that's MS company store price for 'box games.

I recently got Morrowind GOTY edition.  I haven't really got a chance to get into it a lot, but am anxious to see the expansion stuff.  Also not too long ago got Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance.  Really cool game, but not a lot of replay value.  I also got Splinter Cell and KOTOR, but haven't really got into either of them much yet.  With winter setting in, it will be a great time to start on these games.  Way to many great ones coming out for Xbox for me to keep up right now.

Bought Splinter Cell today; BB had selected 'box games for $14.99.  Haven't tried it yet, though.

I found Legacy of Kain:  Defiance today used for $20.  Since I've been wanting this for awhile I snapped it up.  I also bought the new Matrix flick so the game might have to wait a little while.

I purchased Return to Castle Wolfenstein on Xbox for $20.

I also purchased Pac Man Vs. for GCN and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for GCN.

Socom II for PS2.

I really like Wolfenstein- monsters and nazis, how can you make a bad game outta that!

Once Ninja Gaiden has been out for a while longer there should be some good deals at the used store. :D

I played a copy of Ninja Gaiden at my friend's house and it's awesome.  I am waiting for it to drop in price like you.  Is Legend of Kain for PS2 or the box?

The only games I will buy at retail for the rest of this year are Halo 2 and Mario 128.  I'll wait till the others inevitaly drop in price.

Duh!  It's for the 'box! :P     I almost never buy anything for my P2- the only game I've bought in the last year was the new Risk game (pretty cool game, and not really graphics-driven so it plays great for P2).

Dude, you should buy Socom 2!  It rocks!  Also, Final Fantasy X-2 is an amazing RPG with excellent graphics.  You've been ignoring your ps2 for too long if you've only bought RISK in the last year!

One more box game that is heading towards $19.99 is PGR2- looking forward to scoring that.

Very few games look even passable to me on the P2- the 'box has utterly spoiled me, I'm afraid.

The used store has Star Wars: KotOR for $20, too. :o   I shoulda bought it but I already bought the Matrix & Legacy of Kain:  Defiance today...

KOTOR ROCKS!!!!! Get that ASAP.  Best game of 2003 IMO.

However, it's graphics are not that good.  If you are a graphics whore (and it sounds like you are), then the Final Fantasty games on the PS2 have the best RPG graphics.  I'd say the majority of multiplatform games look best on the Xbox, but that isn't always the case- many EA games were created using the PS2 and then ported to Xbox not taking advantage of it's capabilities.  Ditto Metal Gear Solid:SOL which looks better and runs with a smoother framerate on PS2.

I'm not trying to diss the Xbox, as I'll admit is has many graphical standouts, but you should explore a bit more PS2 titles before generalizing that they all look worse than Xbox ones.

Michael

Post by: Rob Babcock on 7 Apr 2004, 02:04 am
I've actually got quite a few P2 games.  It's just that I rarely play them anymore.  The very best of the are passable, but my newer P2 games mostly can't compare graphically with my oldest Xbox games.

Maybe I am a graphics whore!   I didn't set out to be, but once I saw how much better the 'box was I've just found it hard to go back.  Believe me, it's been very painful to admit, as I've been a PS whore since virtually day one of the first PSX.  My brother bought a 'box first and I'd make my excused for the P2; you know, the standard ones (it was out first, more games, etc etc).  But in the end I had to admit it just can't compete.  No knock, it really was out for awhile.  State of the art is a moving target- the last console to market will have the technical edge.  Consoles are like fossiles: like a fly in amber, they show what was happening technically at the moment they were finalized.

I liken it to have B(l)ose speakers then hearing a buddies Maggies one day- try as you might, you just can't shake off the experience.  At that you can kid yourself or you can acknowledge that your world has changed!

Mike,
The online portion of SCPT is indeed very good.  It is one of the best online experiences developed thus far.  The PC version of this game can be had for $29 with the current spate of sales--well worth the money.  ;)

Far Cry is also a an amazing game.

Thanks for the link.  I like gamerankings, as it gives the aggregate of all possible reviews.  Wow- Splinter Cell Pandora's Tomorrow is 7th all time!  Pretty good, though I heard they dumbed down the single player mission because casual gamers thought it was too hard.  Those pussies at ubisoft!!!! :x

I just bought "D&D Heroes" today- been wanting to get it since it came out as the reviews were very positive, but I'd never seen it under $50.  But being the cheapskate I am, I held out til I found it used for $15!     Maybe I'll fire it up this evening & try it out.

I'm far too cheap to pay $50!  :o     I of course have in the past, but I'd have to want something pretty damn bad to pay more than $35.

Gotham 1 was pretty amazing, I bet GR 2 is really wicked.  You'll have to keep us posted.

Guess you never owned a Neo Geo, huh? I had one 13 years ago. And the games were $150-$250 a shot. Ended up selling it after a year or two as I couldn't afford new games for the damn thing (was only 14 at the time).

Now I wish that I'd not sold it... :(

Anyway, I've not bought anything in a good while. Last thing I think I'd bought was Mario Kart DD. I didn't mind the $50 for that. Especially since I'd gotten used to paying a lot more for SNES games, and a few imports for various systems (N64, Saturn, etc.).
Title: PG racing 1 and 2 are absolutely different
Post by: Bemopti123 on 30 Jun 2004, 02:53 pm
Rob, it you ever get to compare the two, you will brace yourself for a surprise.  Gotham Racing 1 has a sort of digital feel, with shadows and the like that feel artificial.  Gotham Racing 2, now, that has a layer of graphics and execution that is absolutely more lifelike.  It is also a hard game when it comes to competition against others, either humans and machine.  Well worth the money I paid for it, about $40.  Now, only if there were people or peatons on the sidewalks.  That would be interesting.

Bought Megaman Anniversery Edition for the Cube last week.  Megaman 1 through 8.  Very hard. Very fun.  The graphics arn't updated so its like you are playing on an old NES.  If you like those type games pick up this one and Viewtiful Joe.  You will be kept busy for a long time.

I have bought Project Gothom Racing 2 (used) and Counter Strike (used) and have bought a Counter Strike book to attempt to save some time. Yet I keep playing Ghost Recon...what is wrong with me....

I got these because they are Live enabled with some kind of scoreboard (that is fun for me).

Anyone play these games on the XBox?

I stopped at BB on Tues but it was too crazy to really shop much.  I'd hoped to check out the newer 360 & P3 games, just to catch up on what's out there.  I also had a couple movies in hand but set them down when I saw the line (in the infamous "corral" they use :duh:).  Maybe next week, or the week after.

Sucks, too- I ended up picking up "The Descent" at Wal-Mart when I got back to Watertown, but the only copies of "The Black Dahlia" they sell are FS. :x

Psychonauts  used, $17 - now runs on the 360 after the update

It got a rave review on a site I frequent, even as a game for adults, so I had to try it out. A lot fifferent from Halo 2

It has similarities to the Oddworld stuff.

It has good colorful cartooney graphics design and animation, lots of collecting powerups and puzzle-solving. The concept/game universe looks fairly well developed, with lots of levels for your character.

It is a 1 player game, and not Live! enabled.

So far it seems a little too youth oriented for me, but i will let it grow on me some more...I am not an "avid" gamer who loves the video roleplaying games, so we will have to see.

Bought these a few weeks back, for PS3:

Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare -- Very cool game and absolutely amazing graphics!  I always forget that games like this leave me a little disappointed, as they are too linear and do not take very long to solve.  I also like more realism in terms of gameplay, which Tom Clancy games have more of.

FIFA 2010 -- I do not like watching soccer, but I have always loved soccer video games.  This one is very, very good!  Highly recommended!   :thumb:

I have actually been getting some mileage out of my PS3....

God of War III (This one is quite possibily the best video game ever created.  The Quick Time Events sequences are blemishes on an otherwise superlative game).
Red Dead Redemption (starts a bit slowly, but once it gets moving it's very addictive)
Mafia II (I would have bought this for the PC but the PS3 version came with some free DLC)
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (great over-the-top Indiana Jones style story.  A few near-impossible spots seriously mar what would otherwise be a perfect game)
Infamous (never got around to this one...but was hooked by Prototype on the PC so I'm hoping to enjoy this one)

Jerome,
I tried RDR a couple nights. For me, I just didn't get into it. Granted, it's visually stimulating with good graphics with "smooth" gameplay, but westerns just aren't my bag. Neat game, I don't mean to down play it at all....just not my thing.

I played InFamous one night for maybe three hours. Same comments as above, but I find that walking down a street and "doing things" to accomplish a goal, win a trophy, or to accumulate items, and/or new "powers" isn't my bag either. Said another way, Having to go from "A" to "B" is too linear for me. My son finished the darn game in three nights. Loved it.  :o

Have not played the others you mentioned.

When "Black Ops" comes out, I may quite my job. Huge COD fan.

Obviously if you don't much care for Westerns then RDR will probably not be the game for you.  But I'm a big fan of Westerns and this game rings true to the genre in many ways that will please gamers such as myself.

I haven't really done anything with Infamous yet.  It is next on my list of games to play after RDR.  I don't mind linear games so long as the design and implementation is good.  For example, the single-player campaign in Call of Duty 4 is completely linear, as are the major checkpoints in each mission.  But the story and missions are so well crafted that you really don't pay much attention to it.

When "Black Ops" comes out, I may quite my job. Huge COD fan.

I won't quit my job...but I may take a few days off to play through it.  :D  If you like COD then give Battlefield: Bad Company 2 a try if you haven't already played it.

A little bump...

just wanted to share which games i have bought lately.

Need for speed hot pursuit 11: amazing graphics and soundtracks. Way different from most wanted and previous versions.

Civilization 5: a nice strategy game, but to be honest...i liked more the civ3.

Crysis 1 is the best FPS I have ever played period. The graphics are simply unparalleled and the game play is wide open. You can go stealth and sneak around anywhere silently taking out opponent after opponent, you can go in guns a blazin' cowboy style, or you can sit back from a distance and snipe the hell out of everything. In any case Crysis 2 is on my must buy list. For console people you are lucky that it's going beyond the PC, though I doubt that the experience will be nearly as amazing.

Also I have been addicted to starcraft 2 in a major way. Can't wait for sequels to that as well! :thumb:

I’m not that much of a gamer but I bought the Nintendo 3DS when it came out. So far I have Pilot Wings Resort, Pro Evolution Soccer and Super Street Fighter 4.

I am loving the 3D, cool.

Pez- I had Crysis 1 on this laptop which has twice the amount of everything needed to run it minimally and it ran but not great and I was so bummed because I could see it was awesome so as soon as I found out 2 was on PS3 I jumped and it looks amazing to me, I just love the overall look of the land from the players perspective...very cool.

Portal 2 is just fun, fun, fun and is what I consider a class act video game, thought provoking, great looking, funny narrative and a ball to play- I was pleasantly surprised actually as I played maybe 10 minutes of P1 with my kids on a visit to see them and thought it was just ok, but I didn't really get a feel for it. Portal 2 should be game of the year but most likely will get beat by Killzone 3 or one of the other wargames, I have Killzone 2, Crysis 2, Portal 2, Dead Space 2-it is the year of the 2!!!!! They all look amazing, Dead Space 2 being the most difficult and challenging as I like to play on casual setting so I can chill and frag and DS2 was so hard I couldn't get to the first checkpoint, my kids took 1/2 hour to get it and they were shocked. After that its definitely casual and fun, that was the only game I got help on....LOL :thumb:

I got both of the first two Monkey Island remake games for Xbox 360.  It's pretty sweet to get to relive the old school on modern day systems.

I was browsing through the lists on Xbox and I ended up getting a game called "Stacking" where you play Russian stacking dolls.  It's sort of a G-rated family thing, but it was pretty clever.  A nice change of pace from Borderlands at any rate.  Cool artwork, nice music.

I think the last game I bought was Heroes of Newerth when they had their most recent $10 sale.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2. It was pretty disappointing, the movements felt different, made it feel more like Battlefield 2. The gun interface is such an improvement, and Zombies is ridiculous.

Anybody else play?

I played in the Alpha, the Beta, and now have the finished product. Haven't played it much in the last month. - Right now I am waiting for a 2.44GB update before I can even play. Hopefully it will be worth it :)

Just grabbed Destiny: The Taken King expansion and hope to log a few hours in soon. If this isn't the big fix people are saying it is, this will be the last expansion I purchase for Destiny. So far I just did a few simple bounties this morning and hope to see more changes, it does hurt a little to see my Legendary armor and weapons bested by new common ones I pick up. But with a bunch of new weapons to try it should get better.  :thumb:

I'm totally addicted to this game. This should give you an idea to what extent, although won't mean anything to anybody that doesn't play the game. Here are my three characters:

I'm guessing not many gamers on this site, but I have all three characters too. My favorite so far has been the Warlock with the Titan coming in second. Looking forward to unlocking the new subclass for each. I see you play on PS4 :nono:, I'm on Xbone...

I'll end up with both at some point but music has taken front seat lately. I only chose the Xbone because I like removable batteries in my controller and they enabled media playback from my NAS. I found that my PS3 controller is now dead and I will have to disassemble it and replace the battery. I can't bring myself to throw away a perfectly good controller just because the battery will no longer charge.

I almost picked it up.  But, I am finally jumping into next gen when my Halo 5 console comes in next month.  That and FIFA 16 will keep me busy.  I may pick it up in December or Black Friday.

Have fun!

Yea, GB, I think there's only a handful and most of those seems to be XBox guys. I think the only PS guy was Ed ("Eclien"), and he's not a FPS kinda guy.
Game on dudes!  :D

I got a spare battery in order to replace what I thought was a dying battery just to find out that when I dismantled and replaced the battery, it was glitchy. Still did not charge properly.  While others might be more electrically or mechanically inclined, I get this impression that the longevity of these units is typically tied with its battery lifespans.

Picked up 3 Need for Speed games for XMas for PC from Origin. Rivals, Payback and Heat also Sudden Strike a WWII strategy game.

Haven't played 'em that much yet as I am sick and listening to music on the stereo on my days off. But I did play it enough to get use to the XBox controller which I couldn't get to work at first. Was going to get a steering wheel but put that off for the time being, maybe next Xmas.

I prefer the older versions of Need for Speed for which I have 5 but they do not work of Windows 10. Of the 3 I have I think Rivals is the one I'll play the most. I want to be a cop to pull over cocky gamers online, but first I need to practice to get up my driving skills.

In real life I drove taxi/courier for 32 to years so I am looking forward to busting amateur drivers.

All gaming duties have gone to the Switch system my son has along with a gaming PC that has been updated.  In the Switch front....Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Edition is on rotation.  In the PC front, League of Legends seems to be getting most play.  I cannot wait for Blizzard to release the new IOS platform version of Diablo.

Destiny has its hooks in deep, so I've not played anything else since it came on the scene in 2014.

I went all out during the holiday season since I just built up a new PC for the first time in 10 years! I purchased Cyberpunk 2077(it was alright), and now I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn. I can't believe the graphics on the latter. It looks exceptional and lifelike!

I purchased F1 2020, graphics are good but I actually need a faster graphics card. Also got Civilization V to work, purchased the game in 2014 for Steam but I didn't realize that I didn't download it properly. Anyway it works now and I'm doing well in my first Campaign. Played Civ II for years but it does not work on Windows 10.

Also have been playing Need for Speed- Heat, Rivals, 2015 since Dec. 2019.
