James,  Fenders seem to run 1-5/8" to 1-11/16", I don't know what years have which? 1-3/4" seem like a good size for us flt top pickers....

You're right on the money...ran upstairs with the caliper...the Bill Lawrence Tele measures 1-5/8 which is 1/16 less than the too-narrow flattop nuts.  Looks like there's a new Thorell neck with a 1-3/4 nut in my future.  I can hear other players saying, "Whoa, that's a wide neck!"

James, I think for most electric players 1-11/16" is a good nut width (unless they have big hands) but for those of us who play acoustic 1-3/4" is the way to go, especially if you sometimes play fingerstyle as well as with a flat pick.  good luck, lou

Lou, on a different note, can you tell us who some of your favorite acoustic guitarists are? Always looking to expand my collection  :D

+1 on that.

I am starting back to practice on my acoustic (Tippin SJT) and could use some fresh inspiration.

P.S. For those of you who haven't (and are interested), search for the thread I started on classical guitar recommendations.  Some stupendous choices there.

Some personal favorites of mine:
Classical: Dale Kavanagh, Martha Masters
Bluegrass: David Grier
Folk/Fahey-influenced: Jack Rose, James Blackshaw

Anyone still like John Williams?  (guitarist, not the soundtrack composer)

I recently added two super sweet flattops to my website.

The Sweet E arch top is in IL right now at the offices of Downbeat Magazine being reviewed by their resident guitarist.  Review and images will appear in an upcoming issue.

Lastly, we added a link for preliminary info for our new instrument accessory called primeVibe that seasons guitars and all violin family instruments.  primeVibe ETA is August and the new primeVibe-dedicated commerce website arrives this month!

Enjoy!
