This was one of those "What the hell" purchases for two bucks...
I didn't really expect to like it, but this is seductively good.  Of course, Torme has that mellow voice, but he is also creative.  His tone, timing, range... is what Stan Getz wishes he could do on a sax if he was more talented.  And Shearing shows up as much more than just an accompanist.

Mel has a beuatiful voice and rarely disappoints.  A guy you should check out is Mark Murphy. I have several of his albums and find each one to be a gem!

Long-time Mel and Mark fan but have to add Kurt Elling to the favorites list. The New York Times declared Elling "the standout male vocalist of our time," and for each of the past twelve years Elling has been DownBeat's Critic's Poll "Male Jazz Vocalist of the Year." The fact that he sang on The Claudia Quintet's What is the Beautiful, their homage to Kenneth Patchen, can't be overlooked. The influence of murphy on Elling is easily heard. Here’s how Kurt describes Mark: "Mark recreated songbook classics and hipped up bop through his phrasing, arranging and unique vocal ingenuity. Mark shows us all that the singers’ art is never done evolving. He showed how moving and dramatic an evening of Jazz singing could be. I also became aware of Kerouac and the whole Beat/Jazz connection through Mark. He has made a lifetime of innovative, truly great vocal Jazz records."

In the mood for more live recorded jazz I pulled this 1961 beauty - Kenny Dorham "Inta Somethin'", with one of my all-time fav alto sax masters, Jackie McLean.

Needed more Jackie so I pulled this lively gem recorded live in studio, "Dynasty", recorded 1988 with his son Rene McLean on tenor and soprano sax as well as flute.
I think it is so cool when a father and son play together.
