Duke Ellington and his Orchestra
A Drum is like a Woman
6 Eye

A bit too avant garde for my taste--couldn't get through first track today (just picked it up at the used record store).  Will give it another shot when I'm more inclined for dissonance.

Featuring Margaret Tynes, Joya Sherrill, Ozzie Bailey and chorus

Now this is suiting my mood nicely...

Billy Holiday
The First Verve Sessions

Oscar Peterson Piano
Paul Quinichette Tenor Sax
Ray Brown Bass
Charlie Shavers Trumpet
Flip Philips Tenor Sax
Barney Kessel Guitar
Freddie Green Guitar
Ed Shaughnessey Drums

A very nice recording of great music.

Nice find, that's a great album! I have in on CD and will replace it with vinyl eventually. Give it more time and you'll get into it more.

I'll give it another shot.  The record is in great shape, but has a lot of surface noise suggesting the previous owner enjoyed it quite a bit.

Funny I almost picked up a couple Cal Tjader albums today, but decided I couldn't buy the WHOLE jazz section...

...and in the category of "now I know why a 50 year old record would still be in unbroken cellophane", Eddy Davis Dixie Jazzmen "Live at the Old Town Gate"

Actually it's not too bad of a performance, and kinda fun energy.  Seems to be pretty naturally mic'd.  Oh well, you pays your $12, you takes your chance...

Norman Murphy Trumpet
Jack "The Bear" Brown Trumpet
Jug Berger Clarinet
Eddy Davis Banjo and Vocals
Ed Wilkinson Tuba
Jerry Lofstrom Bass
Wayne Jones Drums

Ok so this one more than makes up for the amateurish Dixieland album...

Blue Gene
Gene Ammons All Stars (1958 Van Gelder Studios)

Gene Ammons Tenor Sax
Idrees Suliman Trumpet
Pepper Adams Baritone Sax
Mal Waldron Piano
Art Taylor Drums
Doug Watkins Bass
Ray Barretto Conga (which really sets this album apart--such sweet conga playing)

I took a flyer on this one and it really paid off.  I love the straight-ahead bluesy music, the performance is fantastic, and it's a Rudy Van Gelder recording on Prestige (the real reason I didn't hesitate--I figured it had to be decent).  Oh and it's in great shape--very little surface noise--and  All for $7!  Woohoo! I love it when that happens.

 hmmm not sure about that trade Bob, but I'll mull on it a bit  :D

Another one from Sunday's foray to Needle to the Groove...

Joe Williams Live (1973 Fantasy)
Nat Adderly Cornet
Cannonball Adderley Alto Sax
George Duke keyboards
Walter Booker Bass
Carol Kaye Electric Bass
Roy McCurdy Drums
King Errisson Congas

No pic as I'm too lazy, but I'm groovin' on it.

This coming Saturday in Houston and not every far from my house guitarist Larry Coryell is appearing with a quartet.  I have 3 or 4 of his albums.  Damn straight I'm going.  The guy is great.
Whoops.  The dude appearing is actually Larry Carlton.  Maybe he's good, dunno.  I would have really liked to have seen and heard Larry Coryell.
