Hi Cactus Bob.  Here's another one for you.

Very nice SC, Merry Christmas! That is actually the same lp repackaged in '66. Nice album for sure.

I've previously bought disks only to find out that I already had it under a different cover.  Very frustrating.  Now I never buy music unless I can cross reference it with my library or unless I'm pretty damn sure I don't have anything from that artist.  For example, the albums below are identical except for the sequence of the songs.

You can imagine how many times I kicked myself for not looking closely enough.  My only saving grace was that I had gotten the Unsung Hero out of the public library.  Still I ended up with two copies in my collection.  Caveat Emptor!!

Back to the groove:

Samples: Donald Harrison - This Is Jazz: Live at the Blue Note

Reviews:
Down Beat (p.87) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The set ends on a high note, with a backbeat and an attitude, or swagger, if you will. Here, all three join in with a pulse, with more soul and rhythmically, a groove that brings it all together."

JazzTimes (pp.48-49) - "[Harrison] has rarely sounded as free and forceful and charismatic as he does sailing through the open spaces here."

Samples: Gary Bartz - Red & Orange Poems

Personnel: Gary Bartz (alto saxophone); Eddie Henderson (trumpet, flugelhorn); John Clark (French horn); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Dave Holland (bass); Greg Bandy (drums); Steve Kroon (percussion).

Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York on September 24 & 25, 1994.

Reviews:
Entertainment Weekly (2/5/95, p.54) - "...the limber and witty alto sax legend serves up solos that sing and speak, and he does so in the good company of a band that includes bassist Dave Holland and trumpeter Eddie Henderson..." - Rating: B+

Down Beat (5/95, p.45) - 3.5 Stars - "...THE RED AND ORANGE POEMS emphasizes the sensitive, lyrical facets of Bartz's work....elegant, well-crafted mood music..."

Musician (5/95, pp.87-88) - "...alternates last-set standbys with brooding and harmonically-rich originals....His arrangements of "By Myself" and "But Not For Me" incorporate modal interludes and snippets of "Giant Steps" harmonic motion....[he] saves his most earthy improvisations for his demanding compositions..."

Merry Christmas jazz fans!!

Samples: An Oscar Peterson Christmas

Personnel includes: Oscar Peterson (piano); Rick Wilkins (conductor); Jack Schantz (flugelhorn); Dave Samuels (vibraphone); Lorne Lofsky (guitar); David Young (bass); Jerry Fuller (drums).

Recording at Manta/Eastern Studio A, Toronto, Canada between January 15 and July 30, 1995.

Reviews:
Musician (1/96, p.88) - "...relaxed groove. A sympathetic rhythm section simmers on the up tunes and cools down with taste on the ballads....[Peterson's] solos probe the harmonic corners of the tune, with plenty of space, an unhurried feel, and only the occasional hair-raising embellishment.."

Jazziz (12/95, p.28) - "...holy, holy, holy....Every cut is a gem on this recording..."
