KT77 vs KT88
« on: 2 Sep 2023, 02:26 am »
Hoping someone can give me some ideas on what expect from moving from KT77 to KT88?  I know that question casts a wide net, do not need to get in the weeds.

I have not used “big bottle” tubes for at least 6 years.  I moved to the KT77 since my listening room is on the smaller side.

I bi amp my system so that tube mono blocs only feed the high / mid sections and then Class D straight to the woofers.

Any info is great - just realize that know it’s a hard question with lots of factors.

Thanks in advance -

77 have less harmonics than the 88. 77 is a directed beam tetrode, like the 6L6GC which is compatible with the EL34.

You can use KT77 in any amplifier that uses the EL34 with no probs.
EL34 and 6L6GC are not interchangeable.

I biamped with Quicksilver M-60 mono blocks on the woofer/mid drivers and a 2A3 SET on the tweeters so pretty much the opposite of how you biamp. I tried KT 77s and KT88s in the Quicksilvers, both sets of tubes were Gold Lion. I found I preferred the KT88s because they sounded bigger, bass was fuller and better. The 77s were maybe more detailed. So on your setup it would make sense that the 77s would be a better fit because you are using them on the top end. Just my thoughts and of course there is only one way to find out :)

I should have mentioned that my mono blocs are Primaluna Dialogue 7’s and can use EL34, KT77, KT88…lots of options.  Thanks to all…

The Gold Lion Re-Issue KT-88s are very good tubes, one of the very few new production tubes I like.  They will give you a bit more across the board over the KT77s, IMHO.

I have to agree on the Gold Lion re-issue KT88. Warm, robust presentation that's not lacking in detail either. Well balanced tube on all fronts. :thumb:

I guess a good follow up is any experience with the JJ KT88’s?  I have had really good luck with them in the past years.  I did have a few tubes where the quality was pretty bad but they were known as having some issues.

For some reason, the blue tube version gets the nod in most of the internet reviews that I have read.  Seems like blue glass should have no advantage to clear glass…

I like the KT88's more than the KT77's.  And I like the KT66's best of all.
