Usher driver stockpile - What to build with them?
« on: 19 Nov 2021, 03:50 pm »
I've been sitting on these for years and it's getting to be time to build something with them.  Interested in hearing what driver combinations people think would work best.  Mainly looking at doing a stout pair of mains for 2 channel music, but they would also serve double duty as part of a 5.x surround system.  This'll be an active system, but I'm also open to proven designs with passive crossover documentation.

Here's what I have,

(2) 8137A - 8" woofers
(5) 8948A - 7" mid woofers
(2) 9845M - 2" dome mids
(2) 9980-20 BEA - tweeters
(5) 9950-20 - tweeters

It would be hard to go wrong with this design by our well respected member, Dennis Murphy.

Sounds fun.
Design your own!

I would try a 3 way floorstander with ported 8137 close to the floor, MTM with the sealed 8948 and 9980. Tweeter at ear height 39" and mids mounted close as possible to the tweeter. 3rd order xo between MTM for true D'Appolito array to control vertical dispersion.  LR 4th order xo mid to bass @200. Make the box wide enough to accommodate the mids plus 3" wide chamfers on each side and top to smooth the diffraction down into the midrange frequencies (~14" width) I would prefer a 12" woofer instead of the single 8". Or two 8" instead of one. If you do two 8" then space out their heights to minimize any FR dip due to floor bounce cancellation. Don't know if you can easily find more 8137. A 12" near the floor would be better imo.

What are you using for amps and active xo?

I remember coming across this a while ago.  Are the 8945s and 8948s interchangeable?  Would the crossover need to be altered?

Looking at the Usher website, they look really close... I'd be tempted to use it as a drop in replacement.

I'm thinking of going with a WMTM with the 8948s and 9980s, and I'd use either a JBL W12GTI or W15GTI for the woofer and they'd be modular, something along the lines of the Focal Stella Utopia EM Evo.

The 8137s need a pretty big box and I'd rather get more out of this system using the JBLs.  I can build a 2nd set for another room using the 8137s, 9845s and 9950s.

This'll leave me with (1) 8948A and (3) 9950-20s.  Maybe I can find another 8948A somewhere and make a pair of surrounds.
