ThumbBoy speaks...
« on: 13 Nov 2010, 02:42 am »
I went to the specialist today.  I do have cellulitis and osteomyelitis and it is MRSA.  That is all of the bad news.  The good news is:  I do not have to be placed in an IV treatment regimen like the last time.  I do not have an included MRSA pustule that could burst... which would be a very bad thing.  This means that they are going to be treating me with an aggressive oral antibiotic plan.  I got pain killers - YEA!!!  I can get rid of the thumb spike cast - YEA!!!  I can get back to work in the shop as long as I protect the thumb.  The downside is that I will be on a drug treatment plan for at least 8 weeks.  I'm buying yogurt by the case.  It is a good thing that I like it.

For those of you that have been patiently waiting for me to build something:  THANK YOU!   :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:  I'm on those projects next Monday.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers that have been sent my way.  You people are the BEST!

You say you've been through this before Dave? I know nothing of MRSA, what causes it (hereditary?) or if there's any preventitive measures that can be done. Is early detection benefitial (like breast cancer)? Could you enlighten me Dave?

Glad to hear that the cast is off and hopefully the antibiotics will work for you so you can finally move forward for the benefit of us.  And yourself of course.  :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a bad sucker.  Everyone has staph growing on their skin, just like they have strep growing there.  Most staph infections are the icky, got an oozing pimple kind of infection and our bodies just snuff them out.  Problem is when the body doesn't fight it off.  MRSA is the Frankenstein version of common staph and is resistant to a lot of common antibiotics.  What is scary is that there are a lot of people out there in the general population that are carriers.  They don't get sick from it, they infect others.

MRSA can be spread by shaking hands, sneezes, kissing...the normal ways anything is spread.  I have no idea how I contracted it back in '08.  It started out as a tiny boil on one of the fingers on my right hand.  That time it manifested itself as folliculitis - infected hair follicles.  I ended up with it in my nose, my right ear, both hands.  It was really nasty looking and extremely painful.  That is one of the symptoms.  Just a hard look would make me wince   Once a person has had it, they have a predisposition to getting it again.  I try to be careful, but I work with power tools and wood... not a great combination.

Upside is that my doctor is a budding audiophool.  I have him in my sights... :uzi:  Heh, heh.

It's really good to hear that they think that oral antibiotics will do the job.   :D

Dave try sucking the other thumb. Thats what I do when my thumb gets swollen. It takes awhile to get used to it, but after a bit the sucking noise puts me right to sleep.
I know your situation might be a little more serious (which I am not) so Ill say a prayer and play a song just for you.
