Suggest reading Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" 3rd edition, a consummate audiophile primer to learn how speakers behave in-room before speaker shopping. The most important lesson taught is the severe bass peaks/dips inherent to any room and how to address them.
Carefully consider the shortcomings of the chosen listening space (small, odd shaped, not dedicated (to have ideal setup or hours of use), not sonically isolated, and/or not able to add treatments. Most audiophiles way over gear the given room and live in constant frustration.
And soul search for what kind of sonic attributes you're after (dynamic, pin-point imaging, detail, tight bass, clear highs, large soundstage, musicality, etc.) and realize that there is no perfect speaker. And don't forget subwoofers.
Don't discount the design and sonic advantages of active speakers. The ELAC Navis ARB-51, JBL 705P, Adam A7X, and Buchardt A500 offer interesting options that fit your price range (with subs added) and include power amplification.
