What are you listening to right now?
« on: 5 Mar 2006, 06:39 am »
OK, so I get home from a friends house this evening and sit in front of my stereo for 8 straight hours listening to albums.  I'm a firm believer in listening all the way through an album and if I can't because the content isn't good enough, that CD/LP is immediately sold.  My system is by far the most emotionally compelling I've owned and brings me back to the days when I used to listen to album after album on my very modest stereo back in college.  I didn't really care about high end back then, though I've been raised with high end gear since I was born- my Dad is a longtime audiophile and former dealer.

Anyway, I digress.  What I listened to this evening:

The Beatles Abbey Road LP
The Strokes- First Impressions on Earth LP
Grateful Dead American Beauty LP
Mozart Flute Concertos Zuckerman Flute LP
Brahms Piano Concerto #1 Brendel- CD
Miles Davis Milestones CD
Jay Z The Blueprint CD
Fiona Apple Extraordinary Machine LP
The Libertines LP
Daryl Hall & John Oates Rock & Soul Part I LP
Hi Fi Espanola LP
Blur Modern Life is Rubbish CD
Oasis Definitley Maybe LP

What a killer session.  This, my friends, is what it's all about- at least to me.

PS- shouldn't a "What are you listening to" thread be a sticky on this circle?

During work I had the radio on WKCR, 'out to lunch' featured Max Roach in various bands, then Jazz Alternative.
Got home and fired up the 5-disc changer, currently in rotation:
Billie Holiday Ultimate Collection Disc1.
Duke Ellington, blues in orbit.
Steve Roach + Elmar Schulte, Solitaire: ritual ground.
Karsh Kale, redesign.
Claude Chalhoub.

Actually watched the 2hr. of 24 before hitting the play button. I usually leave the player on repeat all discs overnite.

International Relations "professor" - an asshole with a come-over that knows nothing about warfare, and makes his class, a lecture, last a hour and a half for no reason but mumbling bullshit.

I saw Levi last week and he asked me if I really had an 8 hour listening session when I started this thread.  Anyway, yes, I did, though the latter half of it was done on my headphone setup because I can only crank my tunes until a certain time before neighbors complain.

Hey mjosef, thanks for listing that Steve Roach cd - I just researched it, and picked it up off eBay!

I have 4 or 5 Steve Roach/Robert Rich cd's now, and am always on the lookout for interesting music in the "spacemusic" genre!

Great thread, but I cannot listen to more than 25 of my 140 cd's all the way through... guess I fail the mcrespo71 test!

Sure thing MC, I am a big Steve Roach fan, whenever I see his albums if I don't already have it, its hard to resist not getting it. One of favorite Roach cd is 'On this planet', a 70+minutes trip between the spheres.

Picked up a few cds yesterday at the Virgin megastore, mostly from the clearance bins...most interesting find was Sting and Gil Evans/Last session, live at Perugia Jazz Festival' July 11, 1987. Haven't heard it yet but I am very familiar with the sound of the Gil Evans Orchestra during their extended stint at Sweet Basil as the resident Monday nite staple. I am not a real big fan of Sting, and so I passed on a couple other Sting cds.
Also picked up a 2cd set, 'Double shot of blues'...
A 3cd set of house mixes called Wild Gold from a variety of DJs(?)...
Two 4cd sets , Simply Reggae and Simply World.

Let the music play...

OK, another long night writing the dissertation.  If you can't tell, I've got a serious deadline that's upcoming, so I've been holed up in front of my stereo writing.  Anyway, another big day of only vinyl almost entirely listened to via my headphone set up- it is 3 AM right now, you know.

LP's:
White Stripes- De Stilj
Bruce Springsteen- Nebraska- listened to it twice- damn, great album!!!!!!!
Bruce Springsteen- Darkness on the edge of town
Bruce Springsteen- Live from Asbury Park
Bruce Springsteen- The Ghost of Tom Joad
Bruce Springsteen- The Wild The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle
Luna Live
Squeeze- East Side Story
Bruce Springsteen- Greatest Hits (what can I say, Bruce is speaking to me tonight)
T Rex- Electric Warrior

On deck for the remainder of the evening:
David Byrne Rei Momo
Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Amadeus- Soundtrack to the movie

Ok, goodnight.  The AKG's are now almost fully broken in now.

Hey!

I believe you man! :D I wish I would have more time to listen to music with my main system.

The longest listening session with my system was 10 hours non-stop... well beside going to bathroom and get some drinks and snack  Well, that was at the old place, the neighbors up and down stair were out of town that weekend. So, I was having fun! :D Rotating beteen LPs and CDs. And it was a cold night but I was nice and warm with my tubed system on. 8)

Anyway, Micheal... keep those LPs spinning man!

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
