Hello,

I asked Jim if I could post this listing here, as he is the only one who has listened to these, and he agreed.

For sale is a pair of new, custom 3 way Exotica passive speakers. The tweeter and midrange are Exotica; the woofer is the 12" Lambda used in Jim's Archos speakers. IIRC, these are about 92-93db sensitive and play down to 42Hz.

From the email Jim sent before delivery:

"Nick -

We've spent the past three days listening to these speakers.  In the testing process, we found one wiring error in one of the crossovers and got that corrected.  Sounded much better after that.

Today, I had one of my harshest critics (a guy who is not afraid to tell me something sucks) over for a listen.  I wanted to get an opinion other than one from the people here who worked on the project.  He LOVED them."

I'm asking a very reasonable $5500. If you'd like these shipped back to Jim for a refinish, please let me know. I'm in NYC and would prefer a local pickup. There are 3 boxes, one of them long and heavy.

Jim agreed to follow up with a post some measurements

.

Here is a frequency plot...

And a shot of the internal bracing on the woofer cabinet...

Hi,

From what I understand these are fully passive correct? If so, please post impedance and phase curves so we can see how much amplifier power is needed/required. Or a recommendation?

Since we are publishing graphs, it seems the vertical scaling numbers were cropped off in the above pic. What are they? And how much smoothing in the above graph (the horizontal scale)?

Thanks,
Anand.

This was a one-off project done a number of years ago.  When finished, we shipped the speakers to nyc_paramedic and he never had an opportunity to unpack or play them.

Unfortunately, other than the frequency response plot, I no longer have any measurements to post.  And I don't have the speakers here to further test.  But they sounded wonderful and I expect they would perform very well for anyone who purchases them.

As I recall, the F3 was about 42Hz.  This is fairly normal for a 92db speaker.  You could easily run these with a lower powered tube amp if you wanted.

Thanks for sharing those.  I love them.

I prefer this design over the use of the other using plate amplifiers on the subs.

I'd like to own something like these one day.

Yes--they're an entirely passive design.  I don't have an impedance plot for the bass module, but the impedance over most of the range is identical to the stand-alone Exotica monitor.  I would have to fire up my clunker XP computer to check out the impedance precisely, but I'm sure there's nothing in the impedance profile that would tax a decent amplifier.  The vertical demarcations on the frequency response plot are the standard 5 dB, and no smoothing was invoked.

Nyc-paramedic wanted a totally passive pair of Exotica 3 speakers.  So this was a one-off design.  But it worked out very well.  I really liked these speakers.

Ridiculous deal given that the monitors alone would run about 6k if I am not mistaken.
