Title: Updates from Selah Audio
Post by: Rick Craig on 21 Oct 2020, 06:10 pm
Here are the drivers for a new 3-way, the Dettaglio. SB Acoustics Satori 9.5" woofer. Accuton C168 midrange, and Bliesma T25B beryllium tweeter.

wow nice design.  driver selection and the two cabinets per speaker seems pretty uncompromising and for serious business audiophiles

Hi Rick,

I believe I saw in a different post that the bass bin utilizes two passive radiators.  Would you mind sharing your thoughts with your approach?
Did you consider using two WO24-8?

Before starting on the design the owner had specified an overall height. I looked at different woofer / tuning combinations that would have reasonable cabinet sizes and good bass extension. Only one woofer would be used due to the cabinet volume and the passive radiators allowed a lower tuning. A port  of the required length would have too much noise.

In the spirit of that aesthetic, cutting the MT-section baffle's front veneer from the same piece of veneer as the W-section for an exact match might be worth a bit of extra scrap/waste?

These were switched. I'll post the matching veneer set later.

I notice a lot more passive radiators in your designs..  customer request or are more good ones available so you're taking advantage?

I like the look.  Sort of reminds me of the old Sequerra Metronome 7s docked on top of the woofer.  I owned the 7s many moons ago but never got around to get the woofer or the super tweeter.

It's really just a matter of what's needed for the design. Passive radiators are helpful when the box is smaller and needs a lower tuning. In these instances a port isn't practical due to the length required.

This one is going to be good.  Might it be offered as a DIY kit?

Yes, that's the mid plus the Satori Textreme woofer. A kit is possible depending on the availability of the tweeter. It was drop-shipped to me by my customer. A black faceplate finish is also an option for the tweeter.

Rick,

I saw your FB post, so I know how these 4.5' puppies are likely to be used. However, I'm curious about another possibility. I'm not good at reading and understanding all the relevant specs, so pardon me if this is a silly question. Would it make sense to use the 4.5" Purifi drivers as midrange drivers in a three-way design?

Thanks!

Michael

Yes, it could be used as a mid but I think a dedicated mid is in the works.

So I gotta wonder: How come the Ceramica never seems to get any love? From what I can tell, it seems to hit a sweet spot in the lineup.

Anyone own it?

(Sorry if this is a bit off topic, come to think of it.)

What would you like to know about the Ceramica?

Here is a link to my Ceramica build an album, I probably have the world's most unique Ceramica speaker.  https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery;area=browse;album=27684 (https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery;area=browse;album=27684)

The only regret that I might have with the Ceramica was in the selection of the tweeter.  Rick seemed to indicate that he thought the absolute best tweeter would have been BE dome by ScanSpeak, but I'm happy with the speakers as designed.  (The audiophile will always wonder what if  )

Thanks. I'll have to take a look again. I run tubes primarily and use omegas and Vienna acoustics. I'm looking for something with a big soundstage with less warmth in that price range. I have a lot of time. I did notice another AC manufacturer offering something very similar recently, so the Ceramicas really are interesting to me.

Clever placement of the PR. I'd thought the SBA driver was going to be a LF driver, but it's actually a PR. How low will the Purifi driver go in this configuration?

What sound characteristics have you achieved with the new Textron midwoofer? Can you tell us how this speaker's overall sound is different with this complement of drivers vs. using Ceramica woofer and midrange drivers (for example)?

Textreme has excellent detail and resolution. This design excels with image width and soundstage depth.

Rick,

I imagine this combination of drivers <with your XO skills added in> sounds amazing. Are the Futuros a sealed or a ported design? If ported, can the port be placed in the front baffle - or even ported downward?

What are the cabinet dimensions?

Two rear passive radiators which are tuned low so placement near the rear wall isn't a problem. The cabinet is 37" x 11" x 12" (HxWxD) not counting the outriggers (or a plinth / base).

Two 8" round radiators. The tuning is the same as the Dettaglio (see attached nearfield graph). It's -3dB @35hz and -10dB @20hz (no room gain included).
