Title: Help with putting together a reasonable cost set up to measure speaker response.
Post by: Bumpy on 20 Jan 2019, 11:44 am
I hope to achieve this for about £100 as this is for a one off shot at setting up my own speakers.

Already I have an old computer with USB inputs, so I think all I need is a good microphone and (free) software.

I am guessing the quality of the microphone is all important, but where do I start?

Cross Spectrum UMIK-1 USB microphone, see here:

http://cross-spectrum.com/measurement/calibrated_umik.html

Software is Room EQ Wizard (REW): https://www.avnirvana.com/forums/official-rew-room-eq-wizard-support-forum.10/

Best,
Anand.

I'll second that. Just got a UMIK-1 USB mic. Using it with REW. Gives you a lot to work with.

Thanks guys, that looks a pretty promising package :)

Could I ask a few questions:

1. Where is the full range signal generated that it listens to.
2. Is that signal white or pink noise
3. Can it record music normally in WAV files for uploading to EBay.

Thanks

Pretty much all your questions are answered in the discussion that transpires in this link, along with the additional links in the 1st post here:

https://www.avnirvana.com/threads/some-guides-to-rew-and-acoustic-measurement.121/

Also the REW official manual (well organized and rather thorough) is here:

https://www.roomeqwizard.com/help/help_en-GB/html/index.html

And here is the official link (non beta version of REW, which is now at version 5.19; beta versions (experimental) are v5.20 and above):

https://www.roomeqwizard.com/

It might seem overwhelming . But understand it is free. One needs to shovel some poop to get the results we want! I donate from time to time to John Mucalhy (the author) as REW has been immensely useful not only for room acoustics measurements but also has a decent method for measuring analog devices (amplifiers, preamps, etc...).

Best,
Anand.

Be warned that you are entering dangerous territory!

You will certainly improve things by speaker placement but you'll still find large short comings. Then you'll want to know how to address these - room treatment, another major area of learning.

REW is a great tool.
