Here's a link to the plugins. Two I really like is the SuperDateTime plugin, which shows your local temperature  (don't really care about the game info), and the other is the Biography plugin.

This is a link to the thread on the firmware rollback. The consensus is that the new firmware, for some reason, is a step back in sound quality. Here you will find out how to revert back to firmware 15.

Discussion of new (6.2.0) firmware with information on why it sounds different. Also includes code to patch the perl module that controls the volume. Appears to provide the best of both worlds. A more logrithmic style of volume control but with cleaner sound than the current version. It all comes down to the math, at least it sounds that way in the discussion.

Right now it looks like the "fix" is going into the perl code for Slimserver.  The new perl is supposed to only send values to the SB that won't cause the new firmware to loose bits.

So will probably need to grab a nightly, or wait for a real update.

I like the quick development of new features.  It can be a rollercoaster ride though. The SB is the only consumer appliance type product I'm aware of that is tied to open source software.  Almost couldn't believe it when I saw that Slim practically invites people to download Nightly Builds. :o Man are they asking for it or what!

I added the update to the perl module without any apparent ill effects. I need to swap the firmware back to the new version and see how it sounds but it seems a reasonable fix.

[end thread hijack :)]

I have my volume fixed on the SB - I use my preamp to control volume.  I wonder if the new firmware would make any difference sound quality wise in my setup??

I was originally feeding the SB2 Digital out to a Yamaha RX-V1000 as Pre/Pro (using the Yamaha DAC).  Using the Slimserver Preamp Volume control, I can now feed analog directly to my Sunfire Cinema Grand amp (feeding ML Aerius speakers).  This latter setup yielded more crystalline highs, and clearer bass, though, like others, I believe the latest version of the software/firmware has taken a step back in sound quality.  I am awaiting the next beta software that supposedly will rectify this issue.

So, YES, the new firmware WILL make a difference, but you'll need to judge if it's better or worse <g>.

Here's a link (thanks, Val),for a tutorial on setting up EAC and FLAC, as well as other compression formats.
I have a FLAC profile for music I listen to critically and LAME/MP3 @340kb for everything else to save a bit of space. (I tend to think poor recordings in general benefit from a bit of compression).  Anyway, a very good guide for setting up whatever format(s) you choose:

You're welcome, glad that I can help. This post about an updated version of the Moose Windows front end is interesting.

Since this thread has come up again, I am just curious. Would people with an interest in maintaining an audio-related blog want to have it hosted by AudioCircle?
